Budget video editing build

Hi,

I'm upgrading my PC in June and I'd like to have your opinion on these specs:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i3-8100 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($115.92 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - B360M DS3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($65.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill - Aegis 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($88.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $270.89
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I'm looking for a good investment. I'm a web developer and I'm getting into video editing. I'm currently having issues with my current build that I got in 2014, with a core i3 4130 and a GTX 750. I'm looking forward to upgrading the RAM in the next months, and maybe upgrade the GPU in December. Also, I'm currently using my Huawei Matebook as my daily driver since the desktop is having issues, and I have to say that I'm rather surprised by how well this device is performing. It only has a core m5 CPU paired with 8GB of RAM and it's powerful enough for all my web development tasks, as well as some relatively light photo editing and video editing. Surprisingly, it's quite similar to the performance of the 4th gen i3. The point is anything faster than the 4130 should be enough for my daily activities, but I'd like to know if there would be a better way to invest that money, maybe by spending a little more or going Ryzen.

Thanks

What programs?

Id probably just get a faster cpu fo ryour current system, look into a used i7 4770 or 4790

I'm using After Effects and Premiere Pro. I've considered buying a used CPU but on one hand the prices are always surprisingly high for some old hardware, and for future upgradability I'd rather avoid buying DDR3  sticks again.

you want more than 8gb of ram the, ae is very ram hungry.

Id also look at a ryzen 2400g, better igpu and a good amount faster cpu.

That's my point.

I already have a dedicated GPU. As for the speed, I forgot to mention that I'm not overclocking. Is it worth it for non-overclockers?

Then get a 1600, its a good amount faster than the i3, almost 2x the speed for not too much more.

I suggest the Ryzen platform.

Lots of cores for cheap.

Look for a Ryzen 5 2400.

That has 6 cores with 12 threads.

Although I recommend getting a Ryzen 2400g.

It has 11 Vega cores and has 4 cores and 8 threads, all you need.

The i3 lacks with only 4 cores and 4 threads.

Reply if you need more info.

there is no 2400.

The 2400g is a quad core 8 thread

Ram, ram ram ram!
Ram is going to be critical to any video editing build. It's a shame that component is so inflated right now. 16GB is going to be a absolute minimum for editing.

That was my first option but we're talking $180 vs $120. I don't know, that's like 50% more. As for the 2600, PcPartPicker lists it at $195, which is $80 more than the current price of the 8100.

As I said, I'm getting more RAM in the next months. I can afford to invest an extra $80 or so every month. That said, would the 8100 actually benefit from say 32GB of RAM?

32GB for an i3 is too much, especially considering it is DDR4. Get an i5 8400 as a minimum, or better yet get a Ryzen 1600/2600,

OK so I finally decided to stop cheaping out get either an i5 8400 or a R5 2600. Now I'm not going to overclock the R5 and I want something that's energy efficient. I'm seeing mixed results in reviews as the i5 seems to consume more power than the non-OC R5. Which one of the two would be the best solution for me?

Thanks

For now...sell ur 4130 and purchase an old/used 4770 or 4790 fr around $150. It'll be much more cost effective and will be a better upgrade.

Also save ur money fr buying something even more better like ryzen 5 1600/2600.

Also add another 8gb of ram.

The problem is buying an 8GB of DDR3 RAM stick would be a bad investment. I've finally decided to get that R5 2600 CPU.

Lol...

.

But didn't u mention that u wanted arig as cheap as possible....

Also 16gb ram will be beneficial for  video editing......

Also.... ryzen would surely be a better upgrade.... though u HV to spend a lot more in memory....ddr4 is pretty expensive....

What I meant by that is that I wanted the best investment possible, and spending an extra $60 can help me save a lot in terms of future upgrades.

If that's the case....then go with something like ryzen 5 1600.... U can get much better deals on ryzen 5 1600 at microcenter....

Here's a list that I hv drafted fr u.....

Now I'm rather leaning towards the i5 8400, especially after watching the last Hardware Canucks video about hardware acceleration. The fact that I'm not an overclocker also makes me think that I'd rather go Intel.
