Worth upgrading 1800X to 2700X?

The upgrade is depended on what type of work you are going to do,

If cad or editing and heavy programs then sure, If gaming , then it aint worth it.

I can get if for just over £100. Sell my 1800X for £150 and buy 2700X for £288.

 

I got Crosshair VI hero not the VII Hero so I guess I should still be fine there if I wanted to upgrade.

Not worth it IMO. You're losing £100 for a <10% performance gain. The 2700X is definitely faster, but not by enough to warrant an upgrade to me. Your call though.

I'll try to sell my CPU for £225, if no one is buying it then I'll keep it, if someone will, I'll add £50 and upgrade.

The problem is that it is ryzen +, not ryzen 2. Ryzen 2 is supposed to be on 7 nm or something.

If you would upgrade from a 1800x to a 2700x AMDs "upgradability master plan" would succeed. Why just buy 1CPU in 5years when you can buy one every year, right?

I'm happy Intel plan isn't working where I have to buy new motherboard AND CPU. Here it's just measly £100.

whats cheaper? Buying 1board and 1CPU in 5years and being happy with the performance, or Buying one board and 5CPU's in 5Years because not satisfied?

Of course not, it's still pretty much the same processor, this is identical to people asking should I upgrade my i7 6700k to an i7 7700k?

 

Are there differences? yes... should you replace one for the other? obviously not.

Short answer: No

 

Long answer: The upgrade in performance isn't worth the cost, especially since you'll need to upgrade to an X470 board to get the most out of the chip upgrade, but if you're made of money go for it.

I'm tempted by the same situation, so I'm happy to find this thread. Unless I can get a killer deal on the 2700X, I'll probably just wait.

Just wait for Threadripper 2, then at least you'd be getting more of a perf boost.

it's not worth it at all the ryzen + is like 5% faster than 1800X AT BEST it's probably even less than that in real world applications...

You also have to remember that the new R7 2XXX chips allow for greater overclocks.  I have my 2700 running at 4.1 all the time.  I have to see if i can get more out of it.  I upgraded from a Ryzen 5 1600 to a Ryzen 7 2700.

I have zero interest in upgrading my R7 1700 to it.

 

I personally am waiting for Zen 3 in 2020, as I don't think anything less than a 50%~ performance boost is worth it unless what I have now absolutely cannot do what I want it to.

50% boost in CPU performance is actually a really big one. But yea i agree, buy if you cant comfortably do what you want to do.

I also think if they really manage to get the 5GHz mark on Zen3 alot of AM4 buyers will be more than happy.

But its along time to wait, and who knows what Intel will bring out by that time.

I came from an i5-3570 at 4ghz because I was big into game recording / streaming at the time. the i5 just couldn't hack it, even with dedicated recording hardware.

 

Now, I can do all of that even in VR without a hiccup. Worth it.

 

I don't think ANY gen 1 Ryzen user should even be considering upgrading, unless it's from 4-6 core variants to the 2700X. It just isn't worth it IMO.

That's sorta' my thinking as well. It's also doing it with a higher TDP (from 95W to 105W) so it's likely to add more heat, I would assume.

yeah kind of...the higher TDP is due to the higher clockspeed...if you give the ryzen gen 1 a slight overclock to match the zen + you will also boost it's TDP from 95W to 105W

Nothing is free, the architecture of the CPU being the same, the power consumption at a given clock and voltages will also be similar / the same.
