English doesn't have gendered words like say, Spanish does. So when you try to apply gender to inanimate objects you end up with weird ones lol.

 

For me as as native Spanish speaker, ships are very clearly "male" because the noun for them is male

English does but it's more obscured.

There's less than languages like Spanish, but a lot has gone away.

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of words we use are the masculine versions because that's just what people used. Similar to how in Spanish people say tu & Usted, but in English people say you, but not thou.
Formal words were used as informal were forgotten.

Don't forget that language is made by those who speak it, and that context is key. In the correct context, you can understand they as being plural, though I agree it's not the most elegant solution to the "Unknown gender on the Internet" problem.

i would argue that it's not about laziness, but just didnt think of it

we just assigned a gender to everyone we meet on the internet, for me it's mostly male if it's unknown

(Please note I write this with no harsh, angry, aggressive or upset tone. Rereading what I wrote, it could be implied as such)

 

It is my belief that aren't "objects" (Unless you're into that sorta thing). To call someone an "it" feels insulting to me, even if someone asked me to specifically call them that. Maybe it's just a comfort thing.
