1050ti now, or GTX20 series later?

Hi guys (again),

I was looking at the 1050ti for a couple of weeks now, and i'm thinking of buying it, but the new GPU lineup from NVidia is rumored to release this spring, so i can't really decide.

Should i buy a 1050ti after March 18th (that's my birthday, which means money), or should i wait for GTC and see what they say about the new GPUs?

(also, my budget will be around the 200-300USD mark, and i'd be pairing the GPU with an R3 1200 @3.8GHz with 8GBs of 2400MHz ram)

Thanks in advance everyone :)

If I were in your shoes I'd wait. Whenever the new cards come out, you'll be able to get a better deal on the 1050 Ti. I would use the saved money to get another 8GB DIMM.

I would personally wait for the new GPUs to release, and then snatch up a good 10 series GPU when the used market floods with mining cards as the miners jump on the new generation.

I'd look for a good deal on a used GPU. You won't find good value new right now.

@Gikero: The only problem with getting another 8gigs of ram is that i only have 2 dimm slots on my mobo, and already 2 sticks of ram (kind of a long story, it’s not really my “fault”)

@Crunchy Dragon: Yeah, i was thinking about that, but is it a good idea to buy a card that had been used to mine? Also, could you give me some price estimates? Perhaps a 1060 6GB or a 1070 would be nice.

There isn't anything really wrong with gaming on mining cards, as long as you stay on top of maintenance(replacing thermal compound, etc) you should be fine.

I would guess a 1060 6Gb used for mining would cost roughly 175-200 USD, a 1070 maybe 300-350 USD.

My suggestion would be to look for something slightly older and used for a good value, like a 950 or 750 ti (2gb and under cards are affected less).  Chill on that until the mining craze blows over or stock improves.

@dizmo: the problem with used GPUs in general is my location. Here in Hungary the used market sucks (especially now), i was looking at 770s and 970s, they are rare and overpriced, a 770 (if you can find one) costs around 120-150USD (doesn't matter how much vram it has, the only difference is that the 4GB model is even more rare) and a 970 (if you can find one, again) goes for around 270-310USD, so the Hungarian used market is pretty much out of consideration, which is sad.

@Crunchy Dragon: a 1070 for 350 would be super nice (even for around 400, considering that  a new one costs around 780-800USD here in Hungary), but even a 1060 6GB would suit my needs.

I was just guessing, hopefully they aren't too high in price...

@Biggerboot: that's exaclty what i was planning on doing, but then again GTC is only a month away and maybe then the miner cards would start to flood the used market, but i'll try to look for something reasonable.

Opinions/speculation will vary on the matter but I'm not expecting Nvidia to pull a miracle with a mining card that will appease all the miners.  It's going to be a waiting game till the market is over saturated.

@Biggerboot: yeah i know, i didn't mean i think nvidia will release cards designed for mining, i was talking about the new gaming cards. But i don't know, i'm kinda new to the PC scene, it's just what i read, and what the very nice people on here told me.

The 970 would be a better choice than the 1050Ti.

Yeah, unless power draw or form factor is a big variable in your build, get the 970.  Even though that will be a little inflated too, you can probably still dig and find one for a bit less than a 1060.
