OP should do all the free and easy stuff first though.  Like dusting it out and checking the speed it should run at for it's given hardware.

Dusting it out actually makes a great difference, just tidying up my 12 year old server PC by dusting and tidying cable management up (its a prebuilt so u can imagine how terrible the cable management was before but its all rebuilt now) helped me keep temps down and sped it up a little as a result. Fresh thermal compound always helps too.

As I said though laptop are tricky. I had a friend whose laptop fried after he plugged the NVMe since it had come unplugged.

Was it a slim or chunky ish thing? Most laptops I've worked on have been chunky ish and the only slim laptop I've worked on broke since I snapped the ribbon cable that was acting as a power wire.

He got it last year when we were in AIT for the Army, it was a Dell Alienware 15 and he ended up getting a desktop later on down the line. Kinda wish I had done that rather than also getting a laptop, but this laptop has been great, and I'll probably keep on using it for another year or two before it just gets too slow. By then maybe we will have 10th gen processors and the 3rd line up of GPUs, with new RAM and a whole lot of fun for me

From what I've just looked at, those alienware 15 laptops look like a nightmare to work on. But it shouldn't be running slow unless it's virused up to the bollocks and he's not maintaining it properly. One of my machines is an old Dell Inspiron 530 desktop that I've slightly modified and even when it was stock it wasn't that sluggish to say it was a ripe 10 years old when it was fully stock (its 12 years old now).

Well, this has nothing to do with the original poster's laptop running slow but, I'm saying that the laptop my friend had that he shorted out and that's why I was saying you need to be careful when cleaning them out. Even if you remove the battery capacitors can still hold a charge for years.
