Stock Intel Cooler Cleaining

So i have already done this but of course i didnt bother seeing if itd be ok. So on the stock intel cooler they have latches to take off the (what i think is) aluminum heat sink and washed it off with warm water and a towel. Obviously its just aluminum but i was wondering if cleaning it with water is okay and if i needed to do it in the first place. I already put it back on to the fan and onto the MOBO.

Provided that you remove the fan from the heatsink you can totally wash it with water if you want, just make sure it's clean with no residual cleaning product and 100% dry before putting the fan back on it and installing on the motherboard, don't forget to put thermal paste ^^

Personally my advice is to throw it in the garbage and buy a decent cooler.

Sorry man I'm just trying to have a joke as I honestly thought you was joking, it's just metal, wash it, dry it and pop 'er back on and off you go.

P.S. just because I have a high end system please don't infer I am a spoilt brat. I work for everything I have, I also volunteer to a week to help disable children and look after my very sick mother when I'm not working or volunteering.

The only reason i would ever think about recycling it is if it stopped working, but even then i wouldnt have any money to buy a new one. If i broke it i wouldnt be able to use a computer.

You're preaching to the choir here

I'm basically the king of "saving and using cheap crap" and a lot of times you can find better coolers in free computers. pretty much anything with heatpipes and fins will be an upgrade. you can find basic heat pipe and fin stack cpu coolers in old 1366 hp machines.

Even if you do buy a new one, keep it. It can’t hurt to have an extra fan Incase the new one breaks. And you can get the cooler master 212 evo for around $20, if you want to buy a new fan. It is a very high performing fan for the price it’s at.

I would advice against using water. You can't really take fan off like you can with most aftermarket coolers. Meaning there's greater risk of breaking something. You can clean base with damp paper towel or coffee filter. For fins compressed air, papar towels or something else which can scrape dust off fins. Fan blades with paper towels.

If you cannot remove the fan, then @LoGiCalDrm is correct no water should be used. However, if the fan can be removed and separated from the heatsink, after washing and rinsing it can be dried in the oven at the lowest oven temperature which is a bit over 60 degrees Celcius. As ovens are designed to cook food and also keep the food at a temperature that most impedes bacteria growing (such as Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Enteritidis, Escherichia coli O157: H7, and Campylobacter) and the "Danger Zone"  is 40 °F - 140 °F (5-60°C).

Be careful (and gentle) if your heatsink has heat pipes as they may not be sealed for higher temperatures. If your oven lacks good heat convection properties pre-heat the oven, you should be able to touch the shelving (no not with your lips...lol) and then just turn it off.

I use a natural bristled horse-hair brush to get into the heatsink's fins [https://www.gordonbrush.com/brush-fill-materials.php] and a skin cleaning alcohol prep cloth bought from the chemist ( for AUD$5.00 a box of 200, for fan blades.

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves (Abraham Lincoln,1808-1865; 16th US president).

The fan/plastic is clipped onto the aluminum heatsink. I wash heatsinks under water pretty often and dry them with a combination of using a hairdryer and letting them sit.

yes aluminum tends to have water repelling properties that enable it to be contacted by water and not spontaneously combust

For whatever reason, this made me want to put a stock cooler in a microwave.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

I've broken those plastic clips while trying remove fan for cleaning. Just sayin', if there's way to do it without water, use that instead.
