Playstation 2

Paddi01

PS2 is the most successful gaming console of all time, having more units sold than any other console in total. What do you think what were the reasons for this?

- Huge gaming library?

- built-in DVD player?

- Or anything else?

Note: Gamecube and Xbox haven´t been sold half as good together.

I know where you get your information from :P I'd say it's a mix between the DVD player and the games list. If you take in to account how many units the Wii has sold you'll see that the consoles that sell best are the ones that can be used as entertainment for the whole family, which at the time a DVD player would do.

Wasn't PS2 the cheapest DVD player on the market when it came out? On top of that the PS1 sold huge numbers and the PS2 had a monster generational leap over the PS1. 3D games looked horrible on PS1/N64/Saturn but by the time the PS2 came out the hardware was powerful enough to do 3D gaming justice. And then its huge gaming library kept sales going strong for years. Even around the time the PS3 came out you still had must play PS2 games coming out like God of War 2 and Bully.

Sony fucking up the PS3 and making it too expensive for most people, continue to sell the PS2.

Was one of the longest sold consoles:

Came out in 2000 and was sold up until end of 2012 and beginning 2013.

Gamecube was late and only sold for around 6 years.

And also Nintendo pissing off 3rd partys as they do right now...

Yep.

I used mine for CDs, DVDs, and games.  It was the media machine back then.

Only thing the Xbox had over it was the ability to do LAN parties.

Plus, the library of games was huge.  I remember before I sold off my collection.  I had over 40-50+ games for mine.  Also, used games could be bought for cheap.

Another bonus, the PS2 was able to play PS1 games.

- Built in DVD player

- Very affordable

- Huge library which caters to basically everyone, from hardcore gamers to kids, to families and anything inbetween

- Some nice exclusive series (namely Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, the Sly Cooper series and Kingdom Hearts)

- The original sized PS2 was sized akin to some early 2000's DVD or even VHS player, but the PS2 Slim was so tiny it fit into most everyone's TV setups.

backwards compatible to the PS1.

PS2 was the first console to be backwards compatible.

Same as the PS3 wich also was backwards compatible....
