New build loud with top end spec?

zZoKo
Go to solution Solved by zZoKo,

the sound was so annoying that i just gave up and bought the damn ssd, it shall come tomorrow....cant belive it costed as much as a i7 8700k

So a few weeks ago i built this bad boy ( https://imgur.com/a/5ExFy ) i especially tried going for a more silent pc as my previous prebuilt was a jet engine, here are the spec

★ Cpu: Intel i7 8700k ★
★ Gpu: Asus Rog Strix Gtx 1080 TI OC ★
★ Ram: Corsair Vengeance RGB 16gb (2x8) ddr4 3000mhz ★
★ Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock 3 Pro ★
★ Case: NZXT S340 Designed By Razer ★
★ Hdd: 3TB Segata Barracuda 7200RPM
★ Ssd: Corsair Force MP500 240GB
★ Psu: Seassonic Focus Plus Gold 750W 80+ Gold Fully Modular ★
★ Mobo: Asus Rog Strix Z370-F GAMING
★ Fans: x4 Be Quiet Silent Wings 3 PWM
★ Windows 10 Home Edition 64 bit ★

ROOM TEMP ~22C

The case fans and the cpu cooler are both from be quiet and they are supposed to be one of the quietest on the market, the gpu isnt the quietest but its supposed to be atleast decent enough to not be loud.

I did try to set fan curve for the gpu, and under very heavy load it gets at around 80c (im fine with the temp i just want it as quiet as possible, this is the fan curve for it https://imgur.com/a/evFBD

I tried to measure the sound with a phone app called Sound meter, its probably not that accurate but the average noise is 55db while idle, i also set the fan curve in bios for both cpu cooler and case fans to silent, the case should have pretty good airflow (1x120mm back, 1x140mm top and 2x140mm front) it looks sexy too, the pc is not very loud and i understand that it has to make some noise because of the fans but for the price of 3000$ i really expected something better...so the question is am i doing something wrong? Is the pc supposed to make this much noise?

Thanks in advance :)

Try lower the fan speeds even more in a program called SpeedFan. I tuned my speeds so they are the lowest they can be whilst keeping high airflow. I would recommend watching a video of how to use SpeedFan as it doesn't work as you would think.

You say it was $3000 but the majority of that was spent on actual hardware, as it should be. You have a really hot CPU and top of the range GPU running in that case. The GPU is probably the culprit here if it's hitting 80C which seems pretty hot to me, AFAIK, 1080ti are supposed to run pretty cool to maintain the temp based boost of Pascal. That fan curve is a no go in my opinion, you have it basically zero until it gets to 60C, then it will ramp up fast to try and cool the GPU and that will be why your temps are spiking to 80C as it has to dissipate the heat that's already built up. A more sensible set up would be like 30 maybe 25% upto 40C, then maybe 35% at 45C, 50% at 50C etc.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_rog_strix_geforce_gtx_1080_ti_review,8.html

review sample was running 67C but prob default fan curve. Also the S340 isn't a great performing case in terms of temperatures, much like my INWIN 303 its designed more for looks than airflow, another thing hampering your temps.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/9431/the-nzxt-s340-case-review/4

My simple answer here would be to go on water, I am and my 1080 (non ti) sits around 45C whilst gaming and my rig is pretty quiet.

Tuning your fans appropriately so that you get the temps you want at a noise level you like is an art, and it takes time...good luck going forward!

80c is totally fine for 2 maybe 3 years, the clock on the gpu sits at 1964mhz and never gets under, going on water with the gpu isnt really possible so i have to skip that, btw 0 rpm until 60c is the default actually i think it says that on the package too but cant remember exactly, the temps on the gpu dont spike either they either always stay under 70c when playing lighter games or gets stuck at around 77-80 without going higher, if you meant going water on the cpu would the be quiet 240mm silent loop be a good choice? i've heard that water is much cooler but makes more noise, and about the case i dont know why you think it has bad airflow 4 fans seem fine to me and its not too big either but if i were to change it do you have any recommanded ones? (preferably black too)

I have an s340 aswell and the airflow isn't that good on it since the front has two small gaps for air to flow in. Personally, I keep my 1080 below 40c with a fan curve making little noise. I would have a heart attack if I saw my graphics card running at those temps. If you are wearing a headset, why not boost the fan speed since you wont hear it anyway.

im wearing the hyperx cloud headset right now and i can clearly hear my pc idle, i swear i dont understand how other people can get silent pc's, not the best experience with my first build so far...

Can you post pic of some hardware monitor software so we can see how fast case and CPU fans are spinning. Your GPU curve is not optimal, and I don't think its default either. By default 40-50C is aimed temp. Meaning that it would have 0rpm until it hits 50C and would run at very low, maybe 20-30% until 60-65C is reached.

The things to do now. First find out where is the speed/performance limit for your GPU fan. It should be around80-90C (doesn't have major effect on cooling after that point). Thats max point for you to set. Also find out what is your max speed tolenrance for GPU. Something that you won't notice over music or some other reference with headphones. That would be what it should be running when you are gaming.

Next do same with CPU cooler. Also find out what is actually noisiest part you have. Probably case fans or CPU fans. Do same process of finding limits to them.

Tweaking fan speeds will take time and there's also placebo effect where you think you are getting annoyed, but actually aren't. So set once, try over few days and tweak again. I would post pic of my GPU settings (GTX780 reference), but I'd need to boot into Win7 first. Its currently set from memory to 27% at 40C as low limit and 70% at 75C as max.

First identify which components are too noisy--it could be your hdd so booting without it could help. You can stop fans with your hands to see if the noise goes away.

If you're booting your OS and programs off of a ssd, using a slower hdd for games wouldn't be that bad.

I'd suggest going with a 1-3TB 5400rpm WD Red. It's one of the quietest drives I've encountered.

If you're up for modding, you could drill out the rivets to remove the hdd cage and suspend your hdd with something like foam. That would reduce the vibrations transferring to the case which is most of the noise.

I did something like that here:

the only option that i have is really to maybe buy some longer cables drill a small hole in the case and most likely mount the hdd under my desk in a soundproof box or something? 400$ for a samsung ssd is ridiculous here...

I stuck my HDD in the basement when I had my H440. I rested it on my PSU cables which dampened it a lot . Maybe try a soft rubber/silicone bed for it.

That's an F in the profile pic

Old style retail system is $30 and needs empty 5.25" to work. And boy does it work. I had to ditch that solution when moving to another case. Still vibrates but as long as I don't have bottom dust filter in place everything is fine.

just a matter if one is willing to forgo looks to mod some stuff.

PWM SW3's can go down to ~250rpm. Minimum rpm will vary between fans and the degree of fan control is available will depend on the header you're plugging the fans into. If you're plugging fans into your motherboard, check your fan settings in the bios.

600rpm is enough if the case is well ventilated and you're not oc'ing much. I run my noctuas at a similar speed.
