Best Mobo/CPU Combo For Content Creators (Under £800)?

Hey there people.

Wondering if anyone can offer some suggestions in regards to a motherboard/CPU combination for those who are into heavy content creation/streaming situations.

As of now, here are my current basic computer specifications:

CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K @4.4Ghz

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X Designare

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Red

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING ACX 3.0 8GB

As you can see, its pretty good for what it is though I've been hearing increasingly fantastic things about AMD's Ryzen lineup. So, for someone like me who is often editing dealing with 4K footage, heavy rendering loads and so on.

What kind of motherboard/CPU combination would you recommend for the price of £800 or less?

Also, feel free to post any videos that could help me out here or anything of the sort. Thanks guys, loving the community here!

If you're looking to get a system with Ryzen in it, I would wait a bit since Ryzen+ refreshes are right around the corner. And since you'd be going from the 6700k to a Ryzen 7, you wouldn't be performing as well in games

Second hand 5960x and x99 mobo, easily.  You can get them and a good cooler and OC it to 4.4 - 4.7ghz, more if you are lucky.

You can also get a 6900k for slightly higher IPC and 128gb memory support.

Maybe just buy an X99 board new though https://pcpartpicker.com/product/4qRFf7/asus-x99-e-atx-lga2011-3-motherboard-x99-e

With the rebate from either Newegg or OutletPC it would be around the same price of the cheaper boards you would find on ebay

If you go on r/hardwareswap you can get top tier x99 boards for 80-150 bucks, got an x99 of formula for $90 recently.

I'd second the advice to wait for the Ryzen refresh. Especially as the higher end CPU's are being announced first and are aimed primarily at exactly the kind of tasks that you are looking at.

I can see zen+ either matching x99 for clock speed/IPC or beating it in cores with the 4ghz max but not necessarily for value.

This is conjecture but these are my thoughts

Zen+

Pros:

  • 8c/16t 4.4 - ?ghz or 12c/24t 4-?ghz
  • 64gb ddr4 dual channel
  • Ipc on par with sky or kabylake
  • Possibly upgradeable to whatever amd releases in 2019/20
  • Lower tdp

Cons:

  • Lower quality motherboards for the money spent.
  • Likely more expensive

X99

Pros:

  • 8c/16t 4.5ghz+
  • 64 or 128gb ddr4 in quad channel
  • Ipc on par with haswell or skylake
  • Upgradeable to either a cheap high core, low clock xeon (16-22c/32-44t 2-3ghz) or a very rare 10-14c/20-28t overclockable xeon.  Or a 6950x.

Cons:

  • Meltdown and spectre need to be considered
  • Older tech needs to be purchased second hand, no warranty
