Parents won’t let me buy a laptop.

At the moment I have a mid to high end gaming pc with these specs:

i5 7400

16gb ram

gtx 1060 6gb

ASrock H270M pro4

250gb ssd

1tb harddrive

but I also have an iPad Air 2 64gb WiFi which I only use for watching Netflix.

so I wanted to sell it and buy a cheaper tablet and a laptop for school work.

my parents won’t even let me sell the iPad let alone buy a new tablet and laptop.

the reason I want the laptop is for school work, since it is not the best to have to continuously boot and turn off a desktop just to google one thing or to type a 2 minute document. I also wanted the laptop for portability so I could do my school homework even when we were on holiday. I’m only 12 but really want to sell my iPad to get the laptop. My parents are the type that will agree if given a reasonable argument but I really don’t know what to say or how to start the conversation.

any ideas?

i dont know why they dont let you buy a 300-400$ laptop seeing you have close to 2k$ of stuff already, its not a cheap laptop to take notes at school that should bother them. if you want a 2k$ gaming laptop beast tho... then i understand why they would'nt want

Turning on and off your computer a bunch, while not convenient, won't hurt your PC.

As to selling the iPad for a laptop, did your parents buy you that iPad? Because if they did, it's ultimately their choice and unless you come up with that argument, you should respect where they're coming from.

the solution to your problems is not selling the Ipad and buying 2 different devices.

If you need something that boots up fast (or is on all the time) to look one thing up on google or to type a 2 min document you can use the Ipad. Just buy a keyboard cover for it.

Selling the ipad will give you less money than your parents invested in it because you sell it second hand. Buying a laptop and tablet from that budget will give you 2 products that perform so poorly that the ipad would have been easier to work with.

Buy a keyboard case for the Ipad and  you have everything.

I know tons of people who go through university with just an ipad and a keyboard cover. they write their whole thesis ont it so it is just vin for what you need.

a laptop of 170 and tablet of 90 pounds will be worse than doing everything on an ipad, trust me.

Ok everyone is right the 170 pound laptop would be shit in everyway. So get like a dropbox or something account and use cloud storage. Now you have all your docs in one place

Ah so the 2 min doc an quick google is actually 19GB of files.

Well, you should communicate these needs to them and explain why you need what you need.  Go for the 'better student if I get this' angle...

Use google drive for your school documents, and buy a keyboard case specifically for the ipad if you don't want to bring the bleutooth keyboard. It wont be harder than to cary the Ipad itself, and it will give you some extra battery life

If you have the money to buy your own shit, buy your own shit. If you bought that iPad yourself, it's yours to sell.

Unless your parents bought the stuff you're trying to sell, or are involved in buying the laptop you want, I don't see why you can't just go get it yourself. I only see it as an issue if you need them for the money, or you're trying to sell their stuff (I.E. you're trying to sell an iPad that isn't just yours).

I'm all for parental guidance and such, but you can't let them control every aspect of your life if you're an adult and are capable of buying your own stuff. My mom was a control freak (literally, she's a diagnosed narcissist and manipulates things to work best for her); I know how it goes.
