Computer names?

Crunchy Dragon

Hey guys!

My PC upgrade is drawing closer and closer(should have it finished by the end of January) and I'm thinking about what I should name it, so I wondered what kind of technique(I guess you'd call it) y'all use to name your computers.

My upgrade path started over 2 years ago, I was out of the know about hardware for a while then a traumaticish event happened in my life and I chose to dump my savings account at micro center with the only knowledge of "I heard they have more than 4 cores now".  I hated the machine I built from day 1 and bought component after component never satisfied until I started over and built another entirely new machine.  I named the first one Nessy because every time I turned around there was that damned lochness monsta, I said What do you want this time monsa? I didn't hate my first build entirely, just once I realized how big of a mistake I had made buying an APU...

I'm thinking of naming mine something pertaining to the fact that it was built in winter(technically I'm redoing my system but I'm reusing the HDD so it feels like more of a revision to me) and the kind of power it has(albeit not that much by today's standards and whatnot, I'll be using the Kepler-based graphics powerhouse that is the GTX 780).

Some people like to follow some specific theme, but I just wing it with whatever pops into my mind at any given time. My laptop is called "Melvin" for who knows what reason, my previous desktop was "Caballus" (latin for workhorse), the current one is "Carbonara" because it's such a cheesy thing (and because I was hankering for some carbonara pasta at the moment), I had a server called "Watergate" because of all the dirty secrets I had hidden in there and the scandal it would cause if they got loose and so on.

I name mine w/ gundams & ships (from the gundam series ofc).

I.e. Archangel from Seed, Exia from 00, and Barbatos from iron orphans.

Not that much of a reason to it, they just sound cool I guess. Oh, and I also name my usb drives that way too. xD

USERNAME/Porn/Horse

USERNAME/Porn/Gangbang

USERNAME/Steam/Timore

That last one is the scariest secret of them all.

My old rig which am currently using is named after the anime character Tama from Gintama

My new rig which i am going to build this January(still waiting for a few parts) will be named after my fav game of all time Skyrim. i'll be naming it The Skyrim Machine cause part of the reason i am building that scale of a rig is to play skyrim max modded.

my older rig(can call it the first PC i have ever built) is named after yet an another anime character Wendy from fairy Tail

The Computer my father uses for his research (hes a physics professor and works in a university) is amply named as Quantum

Microsoft in there infinite wisdom have decided to impose a VRAM cap for games the that use DX9 o.O. May God Bless them those whoever came up with that idea.

You're looking for something that does not, has not, will not, might not or must not exist ... ... but you're always welcome to search for it.

Might be going for a Portal theme. The Aperture logo would look amazing on the front of my white S340...

Caroline is sounding really tempting right now...

I call my computers "laptop" and "pentium III box"*

*I only use the pentium III box to get data off PATA drives

 "Aeneas troianus est."

I'm allergic to social interaction in real life, don't talk to me in real life please.

I've gone through various naming schemes in the past. The oldest one still active are vocaloids. Len is my current main, with Rin still around. My previous mains are Luka and Miku. Then I have a bunch of Evangelion characters including my laptop Penpen. When I ran out of the nice ones, I started on Final Fantasy 14 "bosses", Ifrit, Shiva, Garuda, and Odin so far...

So... basically find something you like, then start using names from it.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

I used to come up with neat names with themes of what I was interested in at the time, but in my old age now, they are simply Matt-PC and Bedroom-PC at the moment. Depending on my future upgrades and re-purposing of hardware, I might go for something more creative.

The biggest thing is to not worry about how stupid it may seem. I named my file server Emily, I had my reasons. It's like trying to remember something, as soon as you stop trying it will come.

Instructions for frustration management:

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

I never said I was smart, just smart enough to be dangerous.

My idea was that the PC was named after what it will do, or its purpose.

Infinity: Felt like I could do anything with it

Futura: Will last me for a long while, through college

Hacktop: Dual boot Kali Linux on it and start haxoring

Computer engineering grad student, cybersecurity researcher, and hobbyist embedded systems developer

Daily Driver:

CPU: Ryzen 7 4800H | GPU: RTX 2060 | RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz C16

Gaming PC:

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X | GPU: EVGA RTX 2080Ti | RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz C16
