Fresh Windows install seems to be locking up

So I just reinstalled Windows after getting a 960 4GB for Christmas, and my PC seems to be locking up totally at random, with the System process in task manager whoring up CPU. It seems like it does it even after a reboot or two, too. Not really sure what else I should say besides specs are on my profile and I'm running all the latest drivers for everything, as well as the latest up-to-date version of Windows 10 Pro x64.

Uh, you should not reboot it, you're supposed to leave it running for a few hours while it configures all the drivers and software...

 

Not sure if you've messed up something by rebooting it in the middle of whatever it is doing.

Best case scenario it just picks up where it left off when the PC shut down.

 

Basically you're supposed to do this:

Install windows -> leave running for several hours until CPU usage is 0% -> restart -> check for windows updates (it will have to install more stuff) -> leave running a few more hours until CPU usage is back to 0 -> restart again and check for updates again, there should not be anything left to install, sometimes there may be one or two small things.

What happens if you just leave it sitting there? It could be updating. And Win10 doesn't give you the courtesy anymore to tell you that it is. <3 win7.

 

Otherwise, try running a clean boot. Win+R -> msconfig -> services -> hide microsoft services -> disable all (make sure to hide the microsoft ones first!).

It's been running all day downloading games and shit, so it's not that.

It's been just sitting there. All day. What makes less sense is how it was fine earlier on but now it's throwing a shitfit.

 

EDIT: Just to be clear, it's not downloading anything in the way of updates. When it's sitting idle it's sitting at about 30-40% usage, and when I so much as move the cursor it rockets up to the 80's and starts locking up once a second.

I think it's just updating to be honest. You can try turning the updates off for those 35 days max. Reboot the machine and see if it stopped.

I'm telling you with 100% certainty it's not. Drive and network activity are both non-existent.

Right now I'm just going with a gut instinct to nuke the current drivers and roll back a release to see if that fixes it.

 

Seems like a good idea with Novideo drivers.

Latest ones give me no issues, however I don't install the geforce experience and turn off all the telemetry.

And what drivers are you running now, the latest from the website?

I was running 388.71 (aka latest WQHL) and I just downgraded to 388.59 WQHL, and so far things seem to be running mint. Really wish I would have done this earlier since this seems to have been the fix, though it is still pretty early on so who knows if it'll take a nosedive. ?
