Need help making a pc build for my dad.

CooperMyers

My dad wants to play video games with me. We already have the extra monitors and keyboards so all we need is the actual computer. He is looking into playing shooter games like PUBG. Can you guys build a gaming PC for around $800. You can go a little over if you have to. A few extra dollars is not a big deal for us. Just try to stay as close to $800 as you can.

Thanks for the help!

I may be wrong but is that ram on the expensive side?

Edit:  I just looked up ram prices and that looks good.

A bit expensive, but RAM prices are really messed up. Getting slightly nicer RAM will make upgrades easier, and the higher frequency will improve the performance by a few %. And remember that a $20 difference in RAM price is just a 3,5% increase in the total price.

I'm not quite 100% on this build because the CPU is only 4 cores, no Hyperthreading. I do find it a good value at $120, even though you're forced to buy a motherboard at $90. Comes in just over $790 before mail-in rebates, you can buy a hard drive with the rebate money if you want though 480GB on an SSD is plenty of space for most gamers.

Right now RAM prices are ass. $85 is the cheapest you'll find an 8GB kit for. It sucks but we'll have to deal with this for a while.

24 inch is pretty wide for my taste, since these are 1080p you need not upgrade imo. If they're from the same series as my SyncMaster SMB2030N (19 inch), then they also got really nice viewing angles that you won't find out of some modern monitors.

Yea. The build looks nice but I just am slightly worried about the CPU aswell. That seems to be the most likely bottleneck of this PC

Coffee I3s are quad cores, like Kaby's I5s. Unless you play at something like 720p medium-low, the GPU should be the bottleneck.

I think for gaming it's going to be comparable to the Ryzen 5 but I haven't seen benchmark numbers and it'll depend on game. If PUBG uses more than 4 processing threads then it's a no brainer to go for the Ryzen.

Unfortunately there isn't a super cheap value option right now when it comes to CPUs, except maybe Ryzen 1400 which had problems with cache allocation so I don't like it.-

Here's a version with Ryzen 5

The only downside is you get 240GB of SSD instead, but it ends up better in performance. Again use the rebate money to add a hard drive later.

Lowering resolution won't tax the CPU more. Only increasing your refresh rate will :P

My problem with the i3-8100 at the moment is that there are no cheap motherboards. You don't want to pay $100 for the mobo when your CPU is $120, ew

Yes, but since CPUs don't care about the resolution, and don't care about the graphics settings as much, it will allow the GPU to shove out more FPS. Thus moving the bottleneck to the CPU

Hey. I really like this build and we were about to buy it but the parts increased in price to $900. Can you update some of the parts?

At least the ram dropped in price.

That case seems to be a different price. https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16811133248?ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker%2c+LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566

it says like $43 or $21.99 after a $20 rebate card. I have no idea what that means.

Actually the powersuply also is $20 more expensive unless I use a rebate card or something. It may be all of newegg?

Means you fill a form, send it to the manufacturer, and get $20. The form should be on the website.
