Intel Planning Steep Cuts To 'Intel Inside' Program

  • Intel is scaling back it’s Intel Inside program, which could potentially leads to things like PC price increases from OEMs or cutbacks in marketing from systems builders and solution providers.

  • From major Intel partner:

"The marketing funds have been moved to other groups within Intel that aren’t channel-specific or PC-centric. The funds will now go towards driving the business in data center, giving more to the data side of the house instead of compute. A lot of dollars are moving to other areas or kept in house to improve Intel’s profit and margins."

  • The Intel Inside program is not going away.

Title II is done-zo

Source 2: https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/14/16776154/fcc-net-neutrality-vote-results-rules-repealed

  • In a 3-2 vote today, the Federal Communications Commission declassified internet providers as Title II common carriers

  • But does that mean net neutrality is dead?

  • James Opinion: Net neutrality lives! Title II does not equal net neutrality. This issue is overblown.

    • The question isn’t should we have net neutrality, it’s how should we have it.

    • The FTC will regulate the industry as needed (ex post) instead of time and money being spent preventing transgressions proactively (ex ante).

Patreon is Sorry

Source 1: posted by AluminiumTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/872888-patreon-is-sorry-and-wont-be-rolling-out-fee-changes-due-to-backlash/

Source 2: https://blog.patreon.com/updating-patreons-fee-structure/

  • Patreon announced that they were going to change their fee structure, and then they un-announced it.

  • Under their current plan, Patreon bundles transactions on a monthly basis so that the transaction fees (paid by creators) are minimized

  • The proposed change would give creator’s more predictable and consistent incomes, as transaction fees would be pushed to patrons, and would charged to each individual pledge.

  • Patreon’s Creator community revolted, because their patrons were revolting

  • James’ opinion: Patreon’s mistake was focusing on their customer: the creators- even though it’s the volume and quality of the patrons that hold the keys to Patreon’s success.

    • They need to please patrons before creators.

Verizon is suing Mozilla for using Google

Source 1: posted by AluminiumTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/873136-verizon-is-suing-mozilla-for-not-using-yahoo-as-the-default-search-engine-in-firefox/

Source 2: https://techcrunch.com/2017/12/06/oath-and-mozilla-are-suing-each-other-after-firefox-switches-back-to-google-search/

  • Yahoo’s new parent company, Oath, filed a complaint against Mozilla on December 1, alleging a breach of contract.

  • Now Mozilla has filed a counter complaint, stating that the switch back was in line with a deal struck between the two companies.

  • In 2014, Yahoo struck a deal that would make its search engine the default for Mozilla’s browser, to the tune of $375 million a year.

  • When Verizon bought Yahoo, it inherited an annual payment of $375 million through 2019.

  • According to the deal, Yahoo (or whoever owns Yahoo) is obligated to continue payments, even if Mozilla were to drop the search engine as its default.

    • Mozilla was given a contractual right to terminate the agreement if Yahoo was found unacceptable for some reason.

  • Mozilla DID in fact make Google their default browser for their new Firefox Quantum browser, and they think they did so legally:

    • “When it became clear that continuing to use Yahoo as our default search provider would have a negative impact ...we exercised our contractual right to terminate the agreement and entered into an agreement with another provider.”

  • The robot, produced by Knightscope, autonomously patrols a set area using a combination of Lidar and other sensors, and can alert security services of potentially criminal activity , and ensure that homeless people don’t set up camps outside of the office.

  • Knightscope’s business model is to rent the robots to customers for $7 an hour, which is about $3 less than minimum wage in California.

  • the San Francisco SPCA adorned the robot it was renting with stickers of cute kittens and puppies

  • According to Knightscope, “The robot was not brought in to clear the area of homeless individuals. Knightscope was deployed, however, to serve and protect the SPCA,”

    • The SPCA has reported fewer car break-ins and overall improved safety and quality of the surrounding area.”

  • San Francisco recently voted to cut down on the number of robots that roam the streets of the city; the city said it would issue the SPCA a fine of $1,000 per day for illegally operating on a public right-of-way

The net neutrality thing is nuts, in fact the entire american internet setup is nuts. Here in New Zealand they are trying to get fibre everywhere. I have it in my house. The fastest I can pay to get in my house is Gigabit speed. I am not currently at that speed but plan to get it.

Though also here in New Zealand all infrastructure is owned by the government sort of. Also all the ISP's pretty much offer the same thing and just compete with each other on pricing and are also nationwide, so if you aren't happy with one provider you can go to another.

There is no exclusivity.

For the Net Neutrality, if i understand it right then i am worried esp with what Bell is trying to do... Because I'm using a reseller on Bell lines if Bell gets their way it could greatly affect me depending on how they do it or get it. I already have to deal with them screwing around with my internet speeds, i don't need more issues from them...

PC: Who and why would people want this in the U.S.? Who does this benefit, getting rid of it?

LT: Ultimately this benefits a very small handful of the telecom companies. It's just the big companies that are trying to protect their own business interests. They are ones that used to own cable and they're not making money off of you anymore. So they're trying to make money off of the internet now instead.

As far as Luke's reaction, " Holy crap - European hotel WiFi is awesome!" I respond, "Holy crap - Any hotel WiFi is awesome!"

I think that the WAN show document writer being also a host is cheating. I liked the parts when there were screw ups with the document and there would be an "I blame Colton" -moment.

Also, I miss seeing Nick and Jon. Would love to see a very technical nerdy show with Max.

And this is not because James is more critical of the net neutrality "apocalypse". I happen to agree.

I heard what James had to say about Net Neutrality repeal and,

If this is not such a bad thing, and not what we understand it to be, why is FCC doing incredibly shady stuff,

Like deleting people's emails sent to them, forging fake emails supporting that supports the end of NN ,

I read somewhere that almost 80% of the people who emailed FCC opposing NN said they didn't actually send a message,

Patty Duke, an actress who died in March 2016, sent three emails in 2017 from beyond the grave to FCC in support of the repeal.

Yes but both are under government regulations. I remember Telecom years back got ordered by the government to not cause a monopoly on the industry.

To add to this, Chorus for example owns the vast majority of the infrastructure in New Zealand and yes its a publicly traded company not owned by the government. But for example the installation of fibre, that was a government contract that Chorus won the bid for, so the government paid chorus to do that. So as per contract, Chorus has to follow what the government wants. Also while chorus owns the lines, they are not allowed to sell service directly to consumers. Only to ISP's.

Some places in the US have municipal broadband. Most people just don't feel the need for speed. Netflix recommends 5Mbps for HD, Twitch's maximum bitrate is 6Mbps, etc. At some point all you get is faster downloads.

I think what stuffs up the internet in certain aspects of the USA is that there appears to be areas where you have to go through a certain provider. Like that provider has exclusivity to that area. That to me is weird and as a foreigner not something I am used to.

I don't really understand how James got the net neutrality argument so wrong.

There *were* net neturality standards before Title 2 designation, but they were struck down by DC District Court. They said it was reclassification to Title 2 or nothing, so the FCC reclassified. Getting rid of Title 2 classification for ISPs is getting rid of net neutrality as we know it (in the US).

The only caveat is that Congress will vote on the issue, but with the support of POTUS and most Republicans for eliminating net neutrality it's unlikely to remain.

I think you should research more if you wanna talk politics:

You have MAJOR problems in Canada with a leader creating an islamic country. At least the US is not battling this. Not enough though.

Islam is the major enemy of the western countries, no doubt.

You say get more information yet you yourself lack the basics. Canadians not only have a low birthrate we also are doing so in later dates, this is mostly due to cost of living, dying industry among many other factors including equality, safer fun times, toys and the internet.

You want that fixed? Enslave women again, remove safe practices promote rape ban the internet and ban those toys. Seeing as 3 would be impossible/illegal to do and 2 would kill at least 2 industries that brings in hundreds of millions it would be illogical to do.

Immigration is the only logical thing to do to keep populations up w/o handing out large tax breaks and monthly checks. So please take your white supremacy elsewhere.
