Should I delid my 8700?

Hi guys, I have a new build with an 8700k and I am wondering if I should delid or not. As you can see on the picture below my CPU is running quite hot on a custom liquid cooled loop, with room temp. at around 19 to 21. So my question is, is it worth it to delid and lose the warranty? Btw: Is the Voltage on CPU-Z and core temp correct? I have my Vcore on 1.35 with LLC on level 5. Cheers.

if you know what ur doing, you should delid it, i'd argue 8700k has to be delidded to be pushed. 1.35v on LLC 5 is normal, the temps also look acceptable.

 

I've never used a cpu warranty in a decade, and motherboards basically don't have warranties, only warranty i've used is ram (gskill) and video cards (evga)

personally i would be fine with those max temps.

you will see those temps with only heavy tasks like stress tests.

 

with those temps i would not delid unless you REALLY want lower temps.

if you're comfortable delidding a cpu go for it.

A better indication of whether or not you should worry about temperatures is to run real-world tests, like leaving a game on a benchmark loop. Prime95 is useful to test if your system can handle the worst case scenario, but not for something like this.

Are those temps while you're running a stress test? If so, I wouldn't bother. Those tests generally push your CPU a lot harder than it normally would be. @M.Yurizaki said it more eloquently

 

If you delid it, I'd just send it in to Silicon Lottery. Saves you the stress of messing it up, and the cost of the tool.

Errmm, what? Motherboards most definitely have warranties.

Also if we're talking about literally delidding vs. replacing the TIM Intel uses with something else, then that comes with the issue of making sure you aren't applying too much pressure against the bare die if you can't find a shim for it.

RMA'd as in new replacements? i've RMA'd once with them, they sent the board back, still broken, whereas gskill and evga just sent me a new ram/video card, also the time it took with asus support was awful, heard similar things with gigabyte and msi.

I don't know if it was new but it worked perfectly. RMA doesn't require the product to be a new replacement, simply one that works. RAM is different than a motherboard, as is a video card. So you can't really compare the two.

uhh a video card cost more than a motherboard usually, anyway i now buy motherboards not expecting a warranty

Fair, but your experience isn't the norm, and you shouldn't pass it off as such. Motherboards have warranties. It's a simple fact.

i dont know, the fact that they attempt to repair broken parts and send it back broken, that shouldn't really count, so the warranities aren't so simple and not really a fact

Worth it. Knock 15C - 20C off those load temps (maybe more) and push for more clock for the heck of it if you can.

 

Lower CPU temps are always nice though.

That's unfortunate, but is the exception, not the rule.

RMA's are repairs. You're not supposed to get something brand new back.

You get a warranty. You cannot say that's not a fact, because it simply is. Just because you don't understand them doesn't negate that.

Those are some seriously good temps with Prime95 running.  No regular application is going to push it that far.  I'm guessing in games you only get low 60's.

Without even looking at the numbers I would recommend to delid if you feel comfortable doing it, the results are rewarding.  However,  if all your worried about is temps the manufacturer warranty covers you for a few years assuming you don't void it.

for me it's not an exception, there was multiple instances, not just one. Even if my RMAs did work out they were gonna be used boards whereas the other components i got back were new. Let's just leave it at that, i'm not gonna go into what u understand, or don't.

You just don't get it. Just because it's used doesn't mean it hasn't been warrantied. When you warranty your car, you don't get a new one. When you warranty something that runs on gas, you don't get a new one. You get repairs. Same thing with numerous types of PC components. I understand it, you clearly don't.

The thing I worry about is losing the warranty, but I'm not sure if retailers can easily check if a CPU has been delidded, and the warranty goes throught the retailer here in the Netherlands.

That's true, I do notice that games like Overwatch do use AVX2 instructions, so the CPU does get stressed a bit more. My temps in games are around 40-60, with an AVX offset of 2 on 1.32v. But in summer it's probably 8C warmer.

I actually bought a PSU from a company called Sentry and it failed so I shipped my entire CPU to them. They took it tested, sent me back some pictures, of the testing found that my CPU was fried from the PSU and they offered to rebuy me the same CPU and upgrade my PSU for free. I took the offer and the PSU they gave me has been chugging on ever since. I use a new CPU now as it was an older AMD APU.

Use amazon lol... they just refunded my x99 board a year later (ASUS x99 a-ii).  I get them to deal with manufacturers for me, I might be special though since I use them for company and personal, they probably get $5k+ a month from us lol.
