i have the silent switch on my iphone on 99% of the time. i only turn it off  when apps that play music or like videos dont play audio due to it silent being on.

i perfer a vibrate over a sound for a notification, i feel like its rude to have your phone go off anytime so a vibrate and only ill know its going off

I forgot that those functioned as silent toggles, back when I used an iPad, I always used it for rotation lock. If I had it again I might use it but in the cases that I needed it, I likely would already have had an automatic rule set to turn silent mode on (This is on Android, don't know about iOS).

I use it because I always forget to silence my phone at the movies. It's quicker than taking it out of my pocket.

No, it's not. Do Not Disturb on iOS blocks all notifications lighting the screen up including incoming calls, unless the caller calls again within a certain time frame then it will be displayed. Having the phone in silent will still have the screen light up & vibrate when you receive a notification or an incoming call.

I pretty much always keep it on silent unless its the holidays. Its still pretty useful. Most notifications just go through to my mac anyway so its not an issue.

That's what I do too. Do Not Disturb most of the time as well so I was confused how the switch actually worked.

I use it to switch from sound to vibration, but it doesn't change what notifications are being signalled. "Do not disturb" completely silences my iPhone except for cellular calls, because those only happen to me when something is really important. If I don't even want those, I turn off mobile data.

TL;DR: Phone laying around in my apartment: Sound mode; Phone in my pocket: Vibration mode; When in class, bed or with gf: Do not disturb

Combination of the latter two: Flight mode B|

THIS SIGNATURE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK

The switch turns the phone into silent mode. The phone will vibrate depending on how you configured it. When not in silent mode notifications will be heard as normal

Yeah. Plus Do Not Disturb can be used whilst the phone is set to "loud" so if there is a call you will hear it ring if the caller rings back in a short time. I find it useful at night, cause with my line of work it's not uncommon for my boss to ring me at 5am asking me to come in to work 30 in 30 mins time, but I don't really want to be disturbed by other notifications, email, snapchat, texts etc..

im pretty sure you can change that in the settings, to have it be silent or rotate lock
