i7 8700k gets 100 degrees celcius!

PresidentMike

Hey all,

So i got my new PC in today, assembled it, installed Windows on it and did some benchmarks but for some reason my CPU get's really hot when doing an AIDA64 stresstest. It's getting like 100 degrees celcius.

Does anyone know what might be the case of it getting 100 degrees? Something wrong with my fan layout maybe?

fist off, did you remove the plastic from the cooler?

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Do fans work?

Do pump work?

Does the pump make a funny noise?

Did you apply thermal paste? or removed the one applied on the block?

Did you overclock?

Did you leave turbo settings on auto?

Did you leave voltage settings on auto?

Did you enabled ANY sort of overclocking profiles?

lots of variables in your case.

There clearly is something wrong here these are not normal temperatures, you should make a full review on your AiO, remount it with a new thermal paste as well...

There is 1% chance the issue is with the CPU, 9% chances it is the motherboard and 90% the AiO so focus on it.

Do fans work? Yes they do work.

Do pump work? Pump works correctly.

Does the pump make a funny noise? No funny noises from what I can hear the build sounds almost silent.

Did you apply thermal paste? or removed the one applied on the block? I left the one on the block and used that paste.

Did you overclock? No.

Did you leave turbo settings on auto? All on Auto. (Also changed BIOS settings to default).

Did you leave voltage settings on auto? Yes

Did you enabled ANY sort of overclocking profiles? No.

Indeed there is something clearly wrong with this cooler/cpu. When running a new benchmark the temps go from 30 to 80 instantly.

1. As asked before, did you make sure you removed the plastic film from the AIO waterblock before installing?

2. Make sure that there's no multi core enhancement setting in the bios turned to on or auto, such a setting pushes all cores to full turbo boost and voltage ramps up accordingly making much heat

There was no plastic film, just a plastic cap which I removed. And I looked that up and it's off.

well, either the cooler isn't making proper contact or something else is wrong. Get some paste, pull the cooler and figure out whether contact isn't being made or what, fix the issue, then put the cooler in place and tighten it down... not sure what else there is to do

Check to see if your backplate is properly in place? I installed mine and one of the pegs wasn't fully through the mobo while still being screwed in. Left about a .5mm gap.

It's in place. Checked it multiple times. Also watched some Youtube vids and saw that I mouted the cooler correctly. Hope that the Arctic Silver 5 does the job tomorrow.

Is there a setting in bios called multicore enhancement or similar? If so, is it on or off?

The thermal compound spread looks ok, unless it is a pressure thing. Just to check, do temps drop if you push down on the waterblock while it is running? I've had that with a Corsair unit before.

What case is that? Actually, a list of major components wouldn't hurt.

Even without the better thermal paste, those are pretty bad temps. Did you use your cooler on another build before? or is everything brand new?

Shall try pushing down on it when I get home.

That mode is off in the bios

Don't have another PC to try the cooler out. Tried it with Arctic Silver 5, still 100 degrees celcius. Aida64 reporting throttling after CPU overheating.

Okay wait wait wait.. Turns out that the multicore enhancement was set back to auto in the bios again. I set it to disabled and now my temperatures are like 70-82 under heavy CPU load in Aida64?!?

Is it normal that Multicore Enhancement does this to my CPU? Or should I still return the cooler?

Found someone using a 360mm aio on the 8700k and they're getting about 60C at 4.3GHz with intel burn test.
