HP ProCurve 2510G-48 48-Port Layer 2 Managed Gigabit Switch

Easy enough to use? works as a dumb switch if you want/need?

It should work fine as an unmanaged switch. You might need to go through serial to disable its management interface, but that is usually well documented for managed switches.

Yeah, that's cool, thanks... I will be using it to actually learn some more networking stuff, so not worried about that as such, I just meant really that if I was in a hurry to connect something and just wanted it to act as a dumb switch for a bit, that it would do it. So I wouldn't need to go into the management interface every time just to hook up a laptop for instance to the network for a few mins.

I will be trying to learn about VLANS and other useful stuff with it, and having more gigabit ports of course

 

I was going to buy a layer 3 network switch, but thought I'd probably be biting off more than I could chew with that, lol.

the default config is as a normal switch. The only ones I know of that aren't like this are Quanta and similar white-box switches, where you actually have to load an OS onto them in order for the switch chips / ASICs to be activated.

 

just be aware that like Cisco and other companies, HP switches only like "HP" SFPs. We use HP compatible ones from fiberstore.com at work.
