Friend wants to build a new gaming machine, need part advice.

t33to

He just needs a new cpu and motherboard. He doesn't want to overclock and it must be Intel and not a Gigabyte product (he's been burned by them before).

I was thinking the i5-something-non-k and just some generic asus motherboard. Any suggestions?

His budget is $500CAD max.

Extra Info: He's switching from an r7 1700, so he already has DDR4.

This really depends on his budget and a few factors; like right now its pretty expensive to get budget GPU's (like the RX series from AMD), and RAM is really expensive. If he has a nice kit of DDR3 RAM on hand, might be more cost effective to use a 4th generation CPU like the 4790K (or the i5 equivalent) on a Z97 motherboard.

If cost isn't an issue, the 7th gen Kaby Lake i5's will be great, and theres tons of options for customizing.

I'm sure if you drop in a budget, people will be more than happy to throw some part picker ideas your way.

He only needs a CPU and Motheboard. He already has everything else. He's switching back from AMD. So he already has ram and what not.

Is Kaby Lake socket 1151?

Also his budget is $500CAD, I updated the main post but you might have seen the post before I did that.

id probably go with a ryzen 5 1400 over a core i5, of course cost is a factor, but in the UK the 1400 is a fair bit cheaper

Gotcha. Well, since he doesn't want to overclock, I'd say i5 8400 and whatever motherboard comes on sale during Black Friday.

He has RAM? Is it DDR3? Because that won't work on Skylake/Ryzen or newer.

The 8400 and and SLI Plus should cost under that price.

:)

Wouldn't the higher clock of say... i5-7600 be better for gaming?

If he doesnt need super high end or doesnt' want to overclock, I would suggest waiting until early next year for the H and B series motherboards to come out for coffee lake. Right now, only the Z chipsets are available, so the motherboards are really expensive.

If he wants to overclock and wants high-end, the i7 8700K is a solid choice. i5 8400 is solid too, 6 cores.

wait.. why is he doing this? difference in gaming performance will be slim, multi core yes intel has it pipped, but multi thread it will destroy an i5

Because his motherboard had zero day issues but he's not very technical, so by the time he opened a support ticket it was no longer a free fix. So he's just burned out on AMD and wants to get back to what he knows will work. There was lots of hubbub about Ryzen and special ram needs and yatta yatta. He probably should have waited for Ryzen to mature a bit before jumping on the band wagon.

Nope.

If clock speed is a worry the i3 8100 has a high clock speed. Plus more cores will likely be beneficial down the line.

Eh, it's not that much of a difference. Maybe $50, and with Black Friday literally days away the cost increase is basically eliminated. Plus the H/B boards are rumored to have reduced RAM speed support.

If he won't overclock, then it won't be justifiable for him to switch over to locked Intel processor on a Z370 series motherboard for minimal performance gains while paying a lot more. I'd say stick with 1700.

Another option is to sell his 1700 and motherboard, get the cash and switch.
