970 SLI Yes or No

michaelocarroll007

Alright,

TLDR: Which would you choose currently

970 SLI $150

1070 $400

1080 $500

so i have a 970 in one of my computers right now. i have 2 4k screens which the 970 obviously struggles a bit.

i have the option to buy a second 970 for $150 which from some research should put it at 980ti/1070 levels of performance. if scaling was good it should beat them.

a 1070 is about $400 is it really worth it to spend $400 or spend $150 and go SLI for now and wait it out till i can get something more on the level of a 1080ti or 1080 in the future or whatever comes after them at similar perf.

my main game i play is PUBG

Pubg i play with a few items on hight like textures and most on medium/low at 4k with 70% scale so UI and everything is 4k but really im playing at 2688x1512 Approx. just over 1440p. and i get about 50fps avg games pretty jumpy sometimes though from 35-90fps kinda just pubg.

I'd sell your 970 for $150, and use that towards a new GPU.

what's your CPU clocked at? did you try overclocking that more before anything? i've found pubg to be very weird on CPU, it doesn't use more than 2 cores but it wants them to be as fast as possible. otherwise the game doesn't really take much GPU power (though this is 4k)

also pubg doesn't support SLI at all so forget about that option

i5-4690k Yeah overclocking it helps a lot at 4.1ghz  This game is overly CPU Bound for most people. when i play at 1080p high/medium my GPU usage wont even hit 100% at some areas as my CPU is the bottleneck.  Higher resolution my framrate drops and GPU becomes bottleneck again as it should.

I Might be mistaken but i thought there was updated drivers that gave some support to SLI PUBG from my research its been pretty hit or miss no straight asnwer though

Seems like the General Opinion is get a $400-500 GPU. I personally do also always say no to SLI when someones doing a new build 100% of the time. But i figured maybe the $150 vs $4-500 had some more weight in the topic.  Currently i will probably wait untill i can afford to drop $500 on the 1080 but wont be  for a while hopefully a new 70/80 series card drops by then. But who knows maybe ill get impatient and just Splurge dumbly lol i really want more Perf.

if you're only at 4.1 push it. i have the game running on a g3258 in my side system flawlessly because it's overclocked to 4.5 and it's only a pentium. granted it's at 1080p, that's why i said i didn't know how 4k would change that since i haven't tested it.

1 great GPU will always be better than 2 good GPUs.

SLI (not to mention Xfire) never worked and never will work properly.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

when i Run 1080p at decent settings my AVG is above 60  typically hovering at 85-105fps  at this framerate my CPU becomes the bottleneck around 100FPS in the areas the GPU can get it that high they are very equally trading blows with whos the bottleneck.  (Excluding spawn island That shit Murders my CPU and i get like 40FPS and my GPU is way below 100.

I just got a 970 and it's awesome. You really don't need anything better for 1080p.

Yes i Agree for 1080p its still a very great Card. I just turn it up to 4k see the visuals and then have to dial it back down and feel like im missing out lmao.

There about the same Perf as the 1060 3gb and almost double the perf of the 1050ti which is still not a bad card for beginning gamers at 1080p

Currently Pricing of 1070TI seems to be about $470-480 1080 ive seen go for $480-510.  I will keep an eye out when i actually but one but right now i dont think they make sense unless there right at that 450 mark.  Either way like ive said in the other Posts ill probably be deciding between $400-$500 and the 1070ti is in that range so it will get considered if i do buy one

80fps and a 950 sounds Ridiculously high and with a pentium.  But i get 85-105 like i said in game but in the crowd in spawn island the CPU gets Crushed.  if i walk away from the center it gose up a lot to regular amounts  but by the plane area its low.

Yeah im more intrested in this now i just havent cared about spawn island since i typically just wait still for the 1 minute to start anyhow. Im going to look into more if its my game only or its typical of most people i figured due to seeing all 100 people the CPU is working hard

For pubg I'd say get a better card. Best you can. The game blows for performance. But something like bf1 or ww2 when the profiles comes out I'd go sli. My old Keplers still do better then my 1080. Everything should be tried once.
