4770k still relevant in 2017 ?

Hello,

Currently running a 3770 non-k and looking to upgrade. I found a really good deal on a 4770k bundle ( about half the price of an equivalent R5 1600 setup)  I also already have a custom watercooling loop so overclocking it will be good!

Any ideas?
Is its worth it?

Thank you in advance :)

Haswell isn't going to be obsolete for a while but if you can, I'd recommend going for Skylake or Kaby Lake if at all possible unless it's too expensive, in which case go for the 4770K bundle

 in NZD currency its $400 for (4770k , Z97 board, 16gb 2133mhz ram ) = $400
Price for a skylake is around this ($400/$450 i7, $250 mobo , $250 ram ) = $900 -  950
price for R5 build ($400 1600 , $200 mobo, $250 ram) = $850

Thoughts?

Don't go from 3770 to 4770K, you'll net very little performance. If you need an upgrade, Coffee Lake i5 and i7 will be quite a bit better or get a 3770K.

You could also consider BLCK OC on a skylake 6700 / e3 1230 - 1280 v5.

Would still be around $800 as i would need to buy DDR4 ram , no ?

Its from a non overclocking 3770 to a 4770k... that can overclock...

Yes.

Better start saving. It took me a while to decide to jump to a modern platform, and when I did make that decision, it took me even longer to settle on what platform and what CPU to get

also teh equivalent cofee lake build would net me around $1300 NZD for and i7 mobo  and ram compared to $400,

Coffee lake 3 times the performance ?

Not if you get an asus Z170M-E D3 or Z170-P D3 motherboard.

GIgabyte's Z170-HD3 supports DDR3 memory as well

The performance is a pretty big step up, but I'm pretty sure you don't need a Core i7...

Hmm, didnt know that .. would still want to upgrade my ram to ddr4 if going to a newer platform. And the R5 1600 seems more appealing for the price to me

The performance difference between DDR3 and DDR4 isn't that big is what I was told when I asked about getting Skylake with DDR3 memory.

I would've thought a Core i5-8600K would be sufficient, but that was based off a guess since you neglected to list your use case.

Part of the fault is mine for not asking, apologies for that.

coffee lake is over priced in nz . A 7700k is cheaper than an 8600k

The hexa-core keeps up very well compared to the quad-core/HT in rendering. We're talking seconds at the most.

from what ive read 6700k is very close to a 4790k, and apparently the difference has to do with going from DDR3 to DDR4

That's not exactly surprising, Coffee Lake availability is bad which means retailers are selling them for quite a bit.

Since you already have a board I assume you already have DDR3 memory. You can sell that. Upgrading from 3770 to 4770k isn't such a big leap so I don't really see the point.

Buy a 3770k and sell the 3770 non-k to make much of the money back, delid the 3770k, then install and overclock it. I got mine to 4.7ghz with an AIO once delidded (only 4.3 before) at 1.360vcore. Haswell isn't much of an improvement clock for clock. An OC'd sandy bridge is still relevant even.
