Changing from PG278QR (TN) to PG279Q (IPS)? Worth it?

Rakanoth

I currently have an PG278QR TN panel. It is a Gsync 165Hz 1440p monitor. I used my brother's IPS and loved how better it looked. It has an annoying backlight and IPS glow but it still looks great.

What do you think? Would be worth from changing PG278QR to PG279Q? Or should I wait for Gsync HDR monitors coming in 2018?

There is 1 particular problem with those 144 Hz IPS screens.

They all come from AU Optronics, and they ALL suffer from terrible quality management.

Apparently it's difficult to bring IPS to 144 hz.

unusualy  strong Backlightbleeding, Glowing, defective pixels, clouding, whatsoever.

You CAN get unlucky, and order like 5 screens, and all of them aren't really good.

My opinion: If you don't "need" IPS for stuff like professional Photoshop etc.. dont do it. Waste of Money.

TN isn't as bad as people claim it to be, especially those "high end" TN Panels.

Your Eyes get used to it, and you won't notice any difference.

I have a Dell U2414H 1080p 60 Hz screen with IPS (6 bit + FRC) , and an Acer XB241YU 1440p 144 Hz TN Screen with G_Sync. Both are 23,8".

And after a half year or so.. honestly, i do NOT notive the Acer beeing a TN Panel, that's how good it is, in my opinion. i sit in front of it, i don't move my head. But even when browsing, i don't notice really much of that color shift from the viewing angle differences.

Color reproduction is perfectly fine, and not noticeably worse than my IPS screen. Sure, it's not exactly identical, but it's not worse/better. it's more "different". Which comes from not a perfect identical color calibration.

Whenever i watch content (youtube, movies etc), i absolutely dont mind either of my Monitors. None is really better or worse.

Like i said, your senses are getting used to anything.

Your ears can get used to a certain sound signature, and you will feel that to be "natural".

Just like you will get used to a Monitor's slightly different calibration (which you can optimize by yourself), or a slightly different whitepoint temperature etc, and feel that to be "natural".

TL;DR: Keep your TN model, it's one of the best Gaming Monitors you can buy right now.

If you really want a noticeable upgrade.. wait a few more years, and start with the following specs:

4k / 144 Hz / HDR10 / 384 zones backlight dimming, G-Sync 2 (g-sync + HDR).

As soon this isn't 2000€/$ anymore, it would be a worthy upgrade.
