Should I buy a 144Hz or a 75Hz monitor?

KaiserV1

I currently have a Ryzen 1600 and a R9 380. I know the GPU isn't that good, but I plan on replacing it one day, but first I'm gonna buy a monitor because I have a generic Samsung one, so I'm not sure if I should go for a 144Hz monitor just to be safe or save money and but something like a 75Hz one. What do you think?

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600

Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus x370 K7

GPU: R9 380

RAM: 16GB Trident Z RGB

PSU: EVGA 650W Gold

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv

The 144Hz monitor is the obvious choice.

ryzen isn't doing too great at hitting high refresh rates, you'll only see 144hz in less demanding titles, like if you love csgo it's no problem, just don't expect 144 in AAA titles. ryzen can hit 75 just fine as long as your graphics card will push it. I personally don't bother that much after all the human eye can't see more than 60 fps xD

the first bit about unstable high refresh rate gaming on ryzen is right, but what is with the 60FPS Barrier in humans?

ok then, i agree with getting a high refresh rate (144hz) because whatever will happen your graphics card can work as you expected (powerful)

Of course it's a joke, the human eye can, in certain circumstances, not only see a change but notice details from a single frame in 1000. Then again even at 24 fps the human eye misses details quite regularly in feature rich images so it kinda depends... but more fps tends to do good things

144Hz panels will refresh at 144Hz even if the GPU is only pushing 30fps. There will no doubt be a benefit.

More importantly, if you're staying with AMD you'll want Freesync so you can eliminate tearing without murdering performance. You REALLY don't want to see a screen tear when twitch aiming at an opponent. If you like eyecandy, you'll also want IPS over TN/VA for better colors. Although if your objective is to win in competitive CSGO, color don't matter all that much.

I don't know if my next GPU will be an AMD one, but I'll see. Personally I wanted to try out an IPS panel but combine that with 144Hz and the price is higher than my PC. I saw an LG one with 75Hz + an IPS panel, so that's when I started to have doubts. That's probably the only IPS monitor I can afford.

Yes the combination of 144Hz and IPS is really expensive because they are all 1440p or higher. You have to pick between good colors and high recresh rate. LG likes making 75Hz Freesync ultrawide IPS displays, so far those have been the best compromise with an affordable price tag. More so if you have an AMD card.

Should I just go for one that has Freesync or G-Sync? I want to upgrade to an NVIDIA card somewhere in the future. Not sure how bad things will be if I don't have Freesync.

With 144 Hz, Tearing / stuttering will be much weaker than with 60 Hz.

If Nvidia is the way you want to go in the future, and in the long run, get G-Sync. Don't think only about today. Think of the whole Picture^^

Tbh, i would go 144 hz > 75 Hz, easy peasy. it makes SUCH a huge difference.

I would only consider lowering my Hz, if the Monitor has other advantages instead. Like less Hz, but instead UHD Resolution.

In my opinion, even for non-gamers, 144 Hz or at least 120 Hz should become the new standard.

Scrolling in Office, scrolling in Web is so butterly smooth..

i literaly rather browse Forums on my 1440p / 144 hz / G-Sync Monitor with TN panel, than on my IPS one, that only offers 60 Hz (along with 1080p). Because 144 Hz makes a difference even in Webbrowsing / Desktop.
