Platform upgrade - 4930k or 4770k + a video card??

My current rig

2500k at 4.33ghz - GTX 650 - 8gb 1333 ram

I am upgrading and trying to weigh the options I game on the weekends, do school and very light work during the week and constantly edit and render video in between as a hobby with friends.

The Options:

4930k and a motherboard, and maybe an H100i

    Or

4770k, motherboard, and 7970, 280x, 760, or 770.

My gaming experience right now is fine despite the under powered hardware but video editing is the area where I really need the boost and of course more cores wins with rendering, but would cuda acceleration be able to help me more than more cpu cores?

I edit with Primer Pro CS3 and I am not even sure if it knows how to use cuda.     I welcome any input and insight

Thanks for the help

4770k + New video card. a 4930k won't benefit you that much.

the 2500k is a really good cpu, It's a boss at overclocking. If I were you just upgrade to the 4770k with the 770.

i'm not sure if its just how you wrote it, but you do know that the x79 platform (4930k in your case) doesn't have on board graphics, right?  so a graphics card isn't optional if you go that route.

Ya I got that. The weird trade off that I would have to make is to keep the GTX 650

I video edit and render too, but i do not use Adobe products, if the product has support for CUDA, a 780Ti will excel here.

absolutely, thanks. and btw is your 2500k really stable at 5ghz? did you have to bury it in an iceberg to keep it cool? lol

Stable, temps are the limit really, 75c is the most i see, but 80-85c under a stress test.

a 4930 will have a bigger impact on rendering than a 780Ti will (that even if what you use takes advantage of the gpu).

you just gotta decide whats more important to you.  a 4930 will help with rendering, but you're really prolly looking at single digit % improvement time wise, maybe low teens if the software you use takes advantage of extra cores very well.  I say this based on comparing my cousins 3930k vs my 3820k at the time.

a high end graphics card on the other hand will make a pretty dramatic difference on gaming

wow, so what would you recommend as an upgrade from a hyper 212 evo? I am currently running at 4.33ghz and after a long render it is at around 60c.

I use a H100, and JUST get by, i am only pushing 1.4v, which is the upper limit on air cooling, i would suggest a custom loop if you want to try for 5ghz, i am just a complete nut case :P

Well I am a bit of a loony my self so I might just try it. H100i in push pull I think, although my case will only fit a 240mm rad if I mount the fans on the outside. :(

A custom loop with a 240 rad would do better than AIO solution so long as it's quality parts and running right.

Definitely just keep your 2500K and grab a GTX 780Ti like Recon-UK suggested. Where do you live in TN? I live in TN also. :)

Get an FX8320 instead,with a 990FXA-UD3 and a GTX 780.

man, I'm getting tired of people recommending AMD for this type of gaming. AMD CPU'S will be outdated. Plus he has an Intel motherboard. 8320 is not ideal since he is upgrading his CPU and 780 is stupid with an 8320. $150 CPU with $500 GPU.... BOTTLENECK

Edit: typo

Keep the 2500K for sure and get the best GPU that you can afford to pair with it. Upgrading the CPU is a waste of money.

NCIX has the H90 for only $50 with rebate (and you can trust Corsair rebates). It's pretty close to the H100 according to Linus' tests.

Not to mention the 8320 will be a downgrade in many 4-core situations!

It's just that people over estimate the 8320/8350 their ego is too big to pick intel. (I'm neutral) The power draw is too much in my opinion for the amount of heat and performance it kicks out. I know that Intel over-prices since AMD has nothing that can compete with the 4770k. The 9590 is stupid, that thing sucks sooooo much power. I'm not a fan boy since I do pick AMD for low budget solutions but if your build is over $1000, future proof a little bit and go intel.
