Press F to pay respect to Ryzen

57 minutes ago, Douglas The Duck said:

I donno those benchmarks Linus did were quite shocking. I wasn't even expecting them to be that good!

Then you never did your own predictions :P  Based on the knowledge that the 8700k would be basically just a 7700k with 6/12 instead of 4/8, the numbers were very easy to predict.  Interestingly, all the leaked benchmarks I saw prior to launch were, as I suspected, wrong (too low).

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

-Thread moved to CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory.

Basically, buy Ryzen 7 if you need to game and render/CPU work at the same time. Ryzen 5 if you're on a budget, and 8700k if you're gaming with a hint of CPU work.

I wouldn't say that at all.

Based on Linus' video, this platform still needs to mature, as some parts are having voltage issues, potential scheduling issues, and this chip seems to get extremely hot!

You will also be paying a premium for it, like you always do with Intel.

After it matures, I think we will have a truly competitive space, which will drive down the price for both!

So actually, this is a great day for us, the consumer!

R5 1600 is still the best for 200$ , especially with a cheaper b350 board. I still wouldn't consider the i5 8400...

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

The few reviews I read and watched show that the 8700k beats the R7 line in the majority of testing. In turn beating the R5 line in probably everything (I haven't seen any direct comparisons yet) but price wise the R5 line up still probably has a place, but I don't think the R7 does.

@mouf  See my previous post on the previous page

380$ for 8700k  vs 300$ for 1700 with cooler included  OR 1700x without cooler.

120$ for most basic motherboard vs 75$ for a basic b350 mb OR ~ 90-100$ for a high end b350 / low end x370

so you save at least 100$ with AMD system in theory. That's not a low amount.

That is true.

I agree its a good day for all as competition will keep things moving instead of a 1 party rule, the 1800x has been seen on sale for $350 here and there so the price wars should commence shortly!

I admit the 8700k is good but the 8600k is in no man's land. The 1600 has smt as well as 6 cores and it's way cheaper and the 1700 has 8c16t and with a b350 is same price as 8600k + z370 board so it's out gunned at both sides.

Not really.

8700k is 380$ on Newegg right now, and will require a cooler that costs around 50$ to cool it, and if you want to overclock it over 5 Ghz you'd be better off with watercooling.

So overall, you're looking at around 425-450$ for the CPU+cooler.

Ryzen 1700x is only 300$ and coolers can be bought for as little as 25$ and since they don't overclock over 4 Ghz, water cooling won't help so there's no need

Ryzen 1700 is 295$ and includes cooler that's good enough for stock and even some overclocking.

The 8700k uses as much power as the 8 core Ryzens and when overclocked .. see chart on this page: https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3076-intel-i7-8700k-review-vs-ryzen-streaming-gaming-overclocking/page-3

95w on stock, 129w at 4.9 Ghz 1.4v (GamersNexus got a weak performing one).

In comparison Ryzen 1700 stock is 80w, 1700 overclocked to 3.9 Ghz is 131 watts.

Then, you only have 16 pci-e lanes, while with Ryzen you have 24, 16 going to cards, 4 going to m.2 and 4 going to chipset.  No m.2 direct to cpu for you with that 8700k

And then you have the boards more expensive as well, just because of the newer chipset.  Cheapest one on Newegg is 120$ and it's basic as hell, while I can basically get a 75-90$ board based on B350 chipset from AMD with loads more features and have a good PC.

.. ps and the cpu will go up to 85-90c if you OC to 5 ghz... you may have to delid your cpu and use liquid metal to reduce your temperatures by around 20c, see GamersNexus video...

Dude thank you, think post is great and well presented.

I dunno why people think Ryzen is in trouble. even the 7700K was the go to for fastest speeds and gaming, but the value and workhorse of the Ryzen is what won people over, Not to mention it really didn't loose badly at all in gaming. so really nothing has changed here. you want to fastest you go intel and pay more, you want value and still great performance you go ryzen.

This isn't club penguin... not sure how many children you think are regulars on this forum. Most people are simply telling you what they think about intel vs ryzen, just because someone says ryzen is still viable doesn't mean they are "salty".

I am not going to lie.  I got really really tired of hearing, "Have you thuoght about Ryzen?" in every intel thread.  Now I find myself wanting to type, "Have you thought about Coffee Lake?" in every Ryzen thread.

I literally spent 5 minutes talking myself out of posting something along those lines in the last thread I viewed...

BTW, If you posted this thread in the anandtech forum CPU section, it would be instant ban.  Those guys are crazy Ryzen homers.

Everyone keeps saying how r7 is better than i7 in multithreaded workloads when it isn't -.- then I also see how r5 1600 is "better" because it's unlocked and has smt even though i5 8400 outperforms it in gaming by around 40% and performs equally good in "multithreaded" workloads...

The real killer is going to be when eveyone realized that MCE (Multi-core Enhancement) works on the 8700.  When enabled in the bios all cores will boost to 4.6GHz.  6c/12t @ 4.6GHz for ~$300.  GG Ryzen.
