yep 64gb, Normally i wouldnt be fussed but its sat here and didnt cost me anything so swapped out the 8x4gb and put in the 8x8gb, makes sense if i have it to use it haha!

Not sure what to do with my other rigs... might have to get selling and treat myself to a new x99 classy or saber?

The X99 Classy is stellar, especially if you get the deal I got. EVGA had a B-Stock sale and I yoinked this with a 1-year warranty for only $99.

If I were selling that old stuff, I'd keep the 4790K. You have an X99 main rig so no reason to keep the 5820K, and the 4790K is just a damn cool CPU. A mainstream i7 that can still keep up reasonably well today, and with your 970 SCs in SLI it'd not only be an epic throwback rig, also a solid secondary if the main needs to go down for some reason.

Yeah i think a bit of time working out what to keep / shift is the best option. I know ill regret it if i sell but then again i can get some pretty shiny ssd storage for the price i could get ?

This is kind of my plan for the next PC I build. I might go X79 for lulz or even X99 again.

That's always the balance with things. I regret trading/giving away my 980 Tis and S340 Elite, and wish I hadn't traded away my Vega FE. There's always the allure of something nice and shiny, but if you really like the hardware you have then you should keep it. I'd rather have my original MSI Gaming 980 Ti 6G or even the 980 Ti SC I had later than the MSI Gaming X 1080 Ti I had for a bit (I traded it away for a 1660 Ti + some cash since I'd rather have the Radeon VII and didn't need two cards at that performance level). I'd rather have my Vega FE again than the SLI 1080 SCs I ran for a bit, lol. Purely because I really liked the cards (and don't get me wrong, I loved those 1080s, but the Vega FE was just a bit more special).

Same as how I keep being tempted to sell my rig and hop to X299 (I could upgrade to one of the 10 series CPUs coming out and a 2080 or 2080 Ti), but I know I'll regret it. I love my older X platforms, I love my Radeon VII even if it doesn't support ray-tracing or have the better NVENC encoder, and my case is extra special. Tis the original Enthoo Evolv ATX TG (the one famed for bad airflow), it was my 18th birthday gift. I've always loved the look and I wanted to pick something I wouldn't replace. Any other hardware I would have to replace at some point, this case I can keep until the end of time or the PC industry moves away from the ATX standard. I've had it two years now, I want to try other cases like the Meshify C Mini, but I don't want to get rid of this one because of the sentimental value.

If you don't care then hell yeah get that SSD bread my man, going all SSD is ?

Oooooo... I was sorely tempted the other day, 3930Ks aren't expensive and I know guys have pushed them to 5Ghz on not as crazy voltages as you think. That and there's an X79 Classified on eBay for $149 right now, and I think y'all know how I feel about Classified boards...

On the subject of buying things, I was gonna get a 4K monitor but the guy randomly decided he wanted to keep it, actually, so that fell through.

So I said fuck it and bought a j-bin 5960X, should be here Tuesday.

@Crunchy Dragon Well i do have this spare board ?

Made a decision to trade the 4790k to a friend of mine for some all terrain tyres for my subaru rally monster ?

The rest will go toward ssd storage and keep enough for a spare build.

Trading to friends is always approved ?. Like the 1080s I mentioned, I sold those to a friend of mine so I know they're in good hands.

Also you've got a Subie? I've always loved how the WRC ones looked, and they all sound amazing IMO, other than the ones where people put on a dumb exhaust purely to be loud and actually ruin the sound of the engine. Sadly all the ones in my area are either expensive AF or beat up and lowered and had all sorts of garbage done to them (I dislike the idea of slamming and cambering most cars, especially ones built for rally like the WRXs are), I ended up buying my dad's F150 off him that I know has been well kept.

I totally agree, I can't stand people tha put 18s on the car and lower it so they cant drive over a twig. Mine is raised half inch and i have bigger tyres on 16inch wheels (rally wheels are 15s)

here she is driving round the field i keep the horses in:

What is a  j-bin 5960X?

Oh yeah, the Evolv is hella fine. Built in a P350X once too, even being a budget case it was up to the usual Phanteks quality.

And the j-bin is just a specific bin of 5960Xs. There's L bins and all sorts, the J ones are known for being (on average), extremely good overclockers. L bins will do like 4.2 up to 4.5 on a good bin, a lot of J bins were doing 4.5 all core on 1.12-1.2v or so. Some madlads slapped theirs on LN2 and I think got 5.6 at 1.5v? Going off this thread: https://community.hwbot.org/topic/111757-hsw-e-5820k5930k5960x-batch-and-serial-numbers/page/9/

Here's the 5960X I got (confirmed in the description that it's a pic of the actual CPU being sold):
1158242384_ScreenShot2019-10-17at11_25_35AM.png.ff7704c26605c46ceb5a67e9bafede73.png

J547C592, a J-bin.

And another random one also on eBay:
1808565993_ScreenShot2019-10-17at11_26_28AM.png.1acfafe22ef4c8d0aa001580245826d9.png

L427C566, an L-bin.

I know some guys run J-bins at 5Ghz on water (I don't know what voltage they were pushing though), so we'll see how my chip does and if it's a good boye or not. Hoping for 4.5 at a good voltage, but even 4.2 on 8c/16t would be solid. If I can run 4.6 at a safe 24/7 voltage that'd be awesome though, that's what my 5820K runs. IIRC my 5820K is a J-bin as well, but there was never a correlation noticed between j-bins and good overclockers on the lower chips, just the 5960X IIRC. Mine won't go to 4.7 without a good chunk more voltage, and 4.8 is oofies so it's not really a golden chip by any means anyways.

The 5820K is solid, if you hunt around you can find a good deal (saw a guy on here selling one for only $50 a bit ago, I paid $160 for mine a few months before that). They do have gimped PCIe lanes though, so if you need the full 40 you've gotta get a 5930K or higher.

Apparently there are OCable Xeons as well. I've seen many claim that all 1600 series v3 Xeons are unlocked, but then some say it's only some so IDK. Could look into it, the 6 core ones (I think the 1650 v3 or 1660 v3?) aren't too much. The 1680 v3 (8c/16t like the older, legendary 1680v2, and the biggboye 5960X) is around $200 (about $50-90 cheaper than the 5960X), and is in the series that should be unlocked. But again you'd want to double check, and $200 is a pretty big price still.

IDK. Can be a bit faster with a good OC, a guy the other day pushing 4.1-4.2 on his Ryzen 5 2600X was getting uh... I think around 2900-almost 3000 in CB20. I'll push about 3000+ in that, IIRC my best score was around 3200. I'm pushing a 4.6Ghz OC though, running with quad channel 3200Mhz CL16 RAM (RAM speed does make a slight difference in cinebench scores).

IMO the clockspeed gains are more satisfying when OCing X99 chips, though I messed with a 2600 for about 30 minutes the other day and got a clean 4Ghz, that was pretty fun. Still only a 400Mhz increase from the stock 3.6 though, whereas I gained a full Ghz on my 5820K.

You do get more PCIe lanes (with the 5930K or higher), quad channel RAM, and probs some other stuff though since it's HEDT. But for me the X series chipsets have never been for value since Ryzen released (before that, X58 was killer bang for buck), they're just a damn lot of fun to mess around with.

That and EVGA has never made boards for AMD and bruh, I gotta have my Classified boards (X299 Classy when EVGA reeeeeeeeeee ?).

Looks interesting. I have no idea what chip mine is. I kind of want to know but at the same time i don't want to have to take my rig apart lol!

On a slightly different note. I was playing with RAM Cache last night and got my speeds up to 6230MB/s however i think i pootched my m.2 drive as now i can't boot into my OS.

Can anyone recomend a cheap but decent m.2 for my Asus X99-S board?

The Sabrent Rocket is an excellent option (barely more than a 660p and much better), or the ADATA SX8200 Pro (slightly outperforms the 970 Evo in most tests while being much cheaper).

4 PCIe slots? My SR-2 has 7, one other single CPU Classified has 7, the other has 6. My single CPU MSI Xpower board had 6 IIRC. Should be easy to find a dual socket 5520 board with 4+ PCIe slots.

EDIT: full PCIe 2.0 x16 slots btw, but when they're all filled on the SR-2 they drop to x8, I'd assume it's similar on the single CPU boards but I'm not sure.

SR-2 is an Intel 5520 board btw, it's basically a very beastly server board.

No specific models, but if they exist then it's like 99% sure that SuperMicro made one, always prefer them over Dell/HP and such because the PC OEMs use proprietary connectors and such.

Yeah but those aren't full PCIe slots. This should be better: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermicro-X8DTH-IF-Dual-LGA1366-Server-Motherboard-w-1x-Xeon-E5540-2-53GHz-CPU/183970291168?epid=74132667&hash=item2ad57bdde0:g:ieQAAOSwsvVdinJE

Supermicro X8DTH-IF: https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DTH-iF.cfm

  • Supports 5600 series Xeons
  • Dual 5520 chipsets
  • Dual gigabit LAN
  • 6s SATA 2
  • 7x PCIe 2.0 x8 (I believe some are x16 but if you use them all it's x8)
  • Onboard GPU chip for video out without needing a GPU
  • Says it supports IPMI, IIRC that's some sort of BIOS level remote access but IDK much about it
  • has PS/2 ports too if you want those, lol

Drivers for the onboard graphics only go up to Vista though, you'll need to use the basic WIndows ones unless you use a dGPU.

On the IPMI, it supports this software: https://www.supermicro.com/Products/nfo/SMS_SD5.cfm

Supermicro did make a dual lga1366 with 4 full length full wired 16x pcie slots dual spaced for big gpu, all in an eatx or ssb form factor. I forget the model name but you can find it on their site. It does not use pcie nforce switches so is very well suited for virtualization.

.....it goes for more than SR2 cost on ebay, and does not allow overclocking.
