Advice for a Ryzen 5 1600 and 1080 build.

Gazebo

I have 2 builds which has a price difference of $100, one of them is 1080p 144Hz and the other one is 1440p 60Hz.

Questions

  • Should I upgrade to a 650W PSU or is 550W good enough?
  • 1080p @ 144Hz or 1440p @ 60Hz?
  • Would you change anything in either of the builds to make it sightly better or save some money?

Questions you might have for me

  • Wait for Coffee Lake?
    • I haven't read much about the rumors, I won't be getting some of the big ticket items till mid November (CPU and GPU)
  • How much is your budget?
    • Around $2100 CAD
  • Are you going to be over clocking?
    • Probably to about 3.8GHz with the stock cooler

550W is enough

Coffee Lake specs and prices are out.

Since you won't buy until November, I would suggest waiting for reviews. Planning specifics already is a bit silly.

550W is fine, even overclocked.

144 Hz Vs 60 Hz depends on how competitively you game.

Assuming you'll get the 1600, you can get a cheaper motherboard, like the B350 Prime Plus.

Ryzen benefits from faster RAM, so get a 2800 MHz kit at least.

The SL308 should cost about the same as the SSD Plus, and be better.

Get a better case instead of case fans. 2 is enough. LTT has a video on the subject

:)

for a 3.5ghz oc? even the B350 plus will do fine. could go higher if he wanted.

I read quite a few reviews on the B350 Prime Plus and there is an alarming amount of 1,2 star reviews. So that why I made the move the Strix board. (reviews on new egg and amazon)

The above recommendations overall. Also for your build 2 1440p@60hz this rig will do great but for 1080p@144hz I'd wait a few weeks for coffee lake since you're gonna need a bit more CPU IPC to achieve this more easily. On most games the Ryzen 1600 will do 144fps sure but not on the really intensive AAA games on those the 8600k will probably be a much better choice and it might be like a few weeks away.

This is great! I was very unsure about the gigabyte cards. I always see people going with EVGA and that just what I naturally attracted to.

I don't own a lot of AAA games but I do plan on getting Destiny 2 later. Thats kinda why I wanted to finally commit to build a pc is for that game.

don't buy based on the brand, any non-blower style gpu will do fine unless reviews say otherwise.

The Ryzen will do just fine for those. Even AAA games will probably be well over 100fps you might just need to lower some settings to reach 144fps

I didn't want to cheap on things like GPU, PSU, and Motherboard. So that is why I went with a EVGA FTW card but I did look at a more options like the  ROG STRIX and  MSI.

I do not live in the lower mainland but I am not far off only about 7 hours away or so. DC is another website I was looking at too. Seems like it could be worth it. I should mention I am aiming to buy alot of the things on black Friday cyber Monday in November

nah you'll find that 1080ti won't be enough after a year or so. Just like how the 980 Ti is right not xD

Tweaked a few things but the same specs remain with a much more faster card. Faster performance at 0 cost, I find it hard you'll say no to that.

But take your time ordering those parts. The prices would've probably changed a little by then.
