upgrade to i5 or ryzen

Hey guys, I currently have a Xeon E3 1220 v3, and I do light gaming and video editing.

 

My CPU is starting to bottleneck my GPU, and I'm stuck between the i5 7600K or the Ryzen 5 1600

 

Which is better?

Ryzen 5 1600

 

Much better for video editing and about the same for gaming in most games

I would find an i7 or Xeon with 8 logical cores for your current socket.

 

Xeon 1231 V3 or 4790 would fit really well.

I would either do what @ARikozuM says and find a processor upgrade, or go Ryzen.

 

When I'm editing 4K h.264 video in davinci resolve, it uses 6-7 physical cores of my 1700X, clocked at 4GHz, whilst my GTX1070 is barely utilized. 

 

An i5 7600K is not really a good choice, as it has quite limited performance, and is effectively obsolete now with Coffee lake just around the corner.

 

A ryzen 5 1600 or ryzen 7 1700 would be the best options. Not really sure about what you could purchase as an upgrade for your current socket.

Sync RGB fans with motherboard RGB header.

rumors have Coffee Lake like a week and a half away (October 5th), I would FOR SURE NOT BUY a 7600k right now, at a minimum that thing is about to be trounced by the 8350k i3 for a much lower price, I would also hold off on buying Ryzen just for the sake of seeing the price to performance comparisons with Coffee Lake, you tend to get more FPS with Intel CPU's so I would try to stick with Intel if it makes sense.

Find an 8 thread CPU core for your board, or go Ryzen. Kaby Lake is not worth so much as a glance from a Haswell system..

Wait for coffee-lake october 5th and you can get 6 cores at I5 prices from Intel. Better IPC plus higher overclocks
