188 years payback period????

I tested what power consumption my foreseeable gaming rig will have, and it says 348.44 EUROES/year

OK.... interesting, the thing is, because my psu will be gold certified i have 91.91% efficiency... allright... till now it seems awesome.

But then... this happened!!! ::::::

What is that???? payback period 188 YEARS?

So.... in 188 years ill start saving money??? WTF??

Well,

- You need to compare the cost difference between a non 80-Plus certified PSU with your Gold one. The premium in getting Gold is what you need to look for, not the full cost of the PSU.

 

- It is also more about trying to be more environmental friendly at a personal satisfaction level. It is like recycling. You pay for it through your taxes, so why recycle?

 

- what you gain is a quieter computer which may have 0 value for you, or have a high value.

Platinum is better than Gold. Now, if the retail store you buy your stuff have funny priced, or the manufacture MSRP products in a funny way (assuming we are talking about the same manufacture and series), then that is out of your control.

At least that is a quality PSU, get something nice and cheap which will blow up and kill the PC you'll end up paying even more. Some units that are 80+ Bronze can be decent but I'll always go for the Gold minimum for long term use because I like to have some piece of mind.

forget about payback, this is all about efficiency. golds draw more at the wall than platinums or titaniums. besides build quality, that's the only real difference. If you're that close on draw at the wall that you are risking blowing a breaker or melting wires, consider an upgraded circuit.

whats the diff between pci express and pci card?? i placed mine to pci card ( high deffinition audio, [the mobo's audio] and wlan adapter)

Efficiency rating is not actually indicative of overall quality. I'll take a Seasonic 80+ Bronse over an 80+ Platinum pulled from a cheapish HP.

well, no one ever said 80+bronze is bad anyway... but gold ones are usually more reliable and efficient

Second part is true, but relative to how many are available, better rated PSUs aren't going to be any more reliable.

More efficient PSUs also produce less waste heat, which means less heat from the computer to warm up the room which would reduce HVAC demands if you're cooling the space it's in.  (Not that a PC, even at it's most efficient, doesn't spill out a lot of heat when going full blast).

A cooler PSU is also quieter.

 

My server has an EVGA SuperNova P2 650w, it runs so cool that it seemingly never spins it's fan.  I was cleaning the server out and there was zero dust in the PSU basically because it rarely spins the fan so no dust has a chance to get in.

less waste heat also means no overheating of the components and therefore you wont have a molten ram or mobo any time sooner
