Upgrading an AMD FX-6300 to an Intel I5-2500k worth the money?

My FX-6300 has been bottlenecking my R9 280x for a long time now and i wondered if I will see a significant performance increase if I buy an I5 2500k, keeping my 280x.

My goal is to be able to play Far Cry 5 properly when it comes out, will this upgrade do?

I'd be looking for a mobo+I5 set for around 150 euros.

Can you stretch to an i7-2600K? Though the i5 should be good, I've got an i5 2400 and 980 Ti, and get about 85-100fps in EA's Battlefront on ultra at 1080p.

As someone with a 2500k just laying around, good luck. Chips can be found dirt cheap, mobo is another issue. You have 2 main choices here; either get leftover stock and forget about overclocking on a cheap board that couldn't sell or eBay an overpriced Z model.

 

I went with the latter and that MSI started showing signs of instability under a year. 

 

Edit: fun fact the original ASUS ROG board I originally had for the 2500k back in 2011 is more expensive now used (at the time of getting the MSI off eBay) than what it was brand new 6 years ago.

Or get an x3440 and p55 board for $100 bucks or so and overclock the snot out of it. But that's not really an upgrade to fx chips.

Uh I don't think I can do that, i'm on a pretty tight budget unfortunately.

I looked at performance comparisons and it doesnt seem to be that much better than an FX-6300, or am I wrong? 

It's basically a 4.0GHz i5. Mebbe a bit behind a high end i5, but it lets you use new DDR4 Ram and stuff, and has a clear upgrade path for all the new tech.

Yeah problem is that i really dont want to go very high end, My options are either find a good upgrade thats worth it for 150 euros or just stay with what I have now.

Honestly, I'd just go Ryzen 3 on a tight budget than trying to upgrade to a chip over 5 years old lol.

 

Unless you have a friend or family member giving you free hardware, it's not worth the effort to go Sandybridge.

Considering my financial status I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon after this. I'm just looking for the cheapest upgrade that can make it through the next couple of games.

Then the i5 should be fine, though be aware you're locked to that and there's not much you can upgrade before having to buy a whole new mobo + CPU and RAM.

stretch for a sandy bridge i7 then, modern i5's are struggling more than they were so that i5 will do worse, last another year tops

That's not even sandy, thats 1156.  I also wouldn't pay $100 for it, but that's ebay price. If I did more searching I could get the x3440 for $25 off ebay and a P55 board for about $50, probably locally. Then a beefy is cooler, overclock it to 3,8, which is where most of these max out, and it gets around 500 cinebench, which isn't bad.

Couldn't I get an I7 thats a bit better after a while? All i want is to play games with decent FPS, graphics dont really matter.

I'd love to but even 50 extra bucks is just too much for me right now. Also wont have any more money in the future.

I know it's not Sandy, it was in relation to OP and the 2500k which is.

Yeah, an i7 2600K IIRC. I'd try and get one at first, the extra 4 cores will help in gaming. And like I sad, I get a great fps even with my i5 2400 (which is a bit lower than the 2500K, and can't OC. ).

Ryzen 3 is a HUGE upgrade man, FX is really bad!
