S8 Active will finally be available on other carriers and possibly in other countries.

YAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!
Samsung it seems has finally heard our cries, and will no longer be selling their Active SKU as an AT&T only device. While it will be available only on AT&T exclusively for a short period of time, afterwards, Samsung will sell the device on other carriers, as well as possibly in other countries. (Australia, Samsung. Are you listening?)

Quote

AT&T will have a limited time exclusivity on the rugged phone.

this marks an important milestone for the Active series, that Samsung must now view the Active as a viable product, and a product that will do well in other markets.

We've never seen this before and it means that the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active may actually come to more US carriers like Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.

In fact, this could be the first Samsung Galaxy Active phone to launch worldwide in several years. For some reason, Samsung refused to launch an Active outside of the US after the S4 Active.

Nice!

I was looking at the Active phone since I don't like the curved display of the regular S8 but since I'm not on AT&T I couldn't find it.

That's good news.  While I bought my S7 Active unlocked, so I can already take it to other carriers, it's nice to know that the option will be there now.

Just FYI, it's SKU (Stock-Keeping Unit), not Skew.  I've seen a few others post that same word before.  Not really sure where it came from, unless it's because of the phonetic pronouncement.

I think a lot of people will be happy to get the bigger battery, the ruggedness and to ditch the curved display. So hopefully it's a global launch. I think price takes a backseat for the target audience although keeping it reasonable wouldn't hurt.

Probably because people hear it a lot (for example Linus uses the word frequently) but have never seen the word before, so they spell it phonetically, as you say, not realizing it's an abbreviation.

What does the S8 offer over my Current S7 model? Did they finally do away with the physical home button?

Unfortunately, yes.

That's a bad thing? I was under the impression that it would be one less mechanical function of the device that could break from fatigue.

I, for one, like the physical button.  Also, because there is no physical home button, the fingerprint scanner had to be moved to the back.  And the location isn't exactly ergonomic, from what I've read.  I foresee myself sticking with my S7A for many years to come (which I'd already planned to anyway, this just reinforces my decision).

Pretty sweet, but I wish they'd based it on the 6.2" model. The 5.8" is simply too small for me.

Where's my Note8 Active?

It is, but it's also pretty rare to wear out a button. It's not the Apple home button were talking about here ;)

Even on my S8+ the FP location is really not that bad. It was very overblown by review sites.

I didn't plan on upgrading anytime soon either. I mean what on earth am I going to be doing on this thing? It runs Minecraft pocket edition flawlessly as well as emulators for GBA titles. I've been using the android software that came with it. I know absolutely nothing about phone software so I just let it update whenever it asks. Thing that frustrates me is the pin feature I use to access my phone requires me to tap an "ok" button after I've hit all four digits rather than auto-recognizing that I punched it in correctly. Just an inconvenience I've been living with.

The plastic screen is a real bummer for me, since i would rather have a screen protector and risk breaking it than not breaking my display but have it all scuffed up and make some content impossible to read or even have the digitizer below it die without me knowing, even tough the exterior of the plastic screen is fine.

Yeah, I've had to deal with that, too.  I think it's because it allows for a PIN that's longer than 4 digits, which is probably a good thing.

Finally. Carrier exclusives are dumb. I feel the active is like a true Power User phone from Samsung. The Note used to be the power user phone, but it really isn't anymore.

I'd love to see a Note 8 active, thatd be cool.

Unless you're rough on your phone, it isn't going to break before the phone.

At least the on screen doesn't take up usable screen realistate.

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?
