Need help with server cabinet & 4u case selection

hey,

ive looked around on different sites trying to determine what cabinet dimensions match with cases. it seems that each time i settle on a case i cant find a cabinet to put it in. im sure im just over complicating things. but i dont want to dump money into something that wont work together. so i am here asking for help. i am a complete noob when it comes to server parts so forgive me if i am mis-naming something. here is what i am looking for.

  • 15u enclosed server cabinet (glass front door would be preferred)
  • 4u case (to put gaming desktop in)

Hardware mATX/ ATX mobo, able to fit fullsize GPU., fan size 120mm , dont really need hotswap bays on this one because 1tb ssd

  • rails to support and slide 4u case from cabinet

i eventually want to have 3 4u cases in the 15u cabinet leaving some space for extras to be added. as far as budget around $500 preferably less. any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well, the width and U sizes are all the same, it's how many Us high it is and how  far back it goes that matter, servers need full sized cabinets that can cost hundreds for one. I'm not sure why you want a gaming rig in it though, but most 4U cases are either custom or from OEMs like HP and Dell. I know Cablematic make a cheap one, and Supermicro make ones but they mostly come with Xeon boards already installed. I think they do sell them on their own though. Glass front is not advised, server need to breath, so unless you have a lot of fans to put at the top and bottom don't.

Yours faithfully

Same reason why Linus put his gaming computer in a 4U rackmount chassis in the first place.

If he has other computers built into rackmount chassis and already has a server cabinet, he could consolidate all of them into one cabinet.

  • I looked on Newegg for a 15U server cabinet, and there's one from iStarUSA that'll run you USD $699. It has a perforated front door (not glass because then it will choke out the rackmounted computers).
  • There are various 4U tall rackmount chassis everywhere. I would recommend taking a look at this Rosewill 4U rackmount chassis that will fit E-ATX boards (12 x 13), has 7 PCIe expansion slots, and has a triple 5.25" ODD bay so that you can choose to install an iStarUSA 4 3.5" hot swap cage to greatly expand your HDD storage needs. Cooling shouldn't be an issue either. Plus it will take an ATX power supply.
  • For rackmount sliding rails, I would strongly recommend to go with the ones Linus uses for the server room and for his personal server setup. They are excellent, but I don't remember the brand he uses.

@JurunceNK i checked out istarusa they have a WNG-2710 27u for $317 i may go that route. i also found a 4u case by them also D-400 $163. the rails i chose for now is APC SU032A 4-Post Rackmount Rails for $55. Thanks i appreciate the help!

No probs.

I would still recommend getting sliding rails still so that way if you ever need to service a computer, it will make your life that much easier.

@LinusTech do you know which particular sliding rails you used for the server room and your personal servers and computers at home? I couldn't find them.

I personally use the D-400 as a live streaming encoder in a tv truck.  We had to upgrade components in the box during our upgrade to HD.  We were using similar rails to those, and they are a pain in the neck if you want to open up the box.  If possible, get the sliding rails that iStar offers for the case.

There are tons of different sliding rail designs, all my ProLiant servers use sliding rails, universal ones that mount (inside the cabinet) onto the ones on the chassis, the way they mount (to the chassis) is unique to this series but the rails are a one size fits all deal for the slidey part. .

Not sure about your direction... glass doors on the front of rack with gaming hardware inside? Seems like a way to chock off the airflow.

Depending where the racks going to be placed it could make it easier to channel airflow through a filter.

I use this method in my work racks cause we're in a dusty environment.
