Why is there a hole in my CPU? Is this normal?

Below is a picture of my CPU and I noticed a hole in the bottom right corner.

Is this normal? I feel like thermal paste would just get into the hole and damage the CPU. Even if the thermal paste doesn't damage the CPU, wouldn't it dry up so the next time I need to install it on a new cooler, it would have old thermal paste in the hole?

Googling it shows that it's ok if paste gets in there

 

try it, if there's a problem just RMA it to Intel

ITS FINE.

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

I usually just scrape it out with a soft toothpick. Not an issue.

It's drilled in the top to let gases escape when they "glue" the IHS to the chip. Intel has said that it is fine if thermal paste get's into the hole. It won't hurt the chip or cause it to short circuit.

Lol why did I you mark over the cpu info? Crucial to tell whether it's an issue.

Any ways, no CPU should have a hole in it, you should contact your retailer for a return asap.

well, if you look at the original post it has a picture and the cpu itself has this on it written: e5 2630v4.

and when people type that into goole, you get all kinds of pictures of that cpu, all with a hole in the bottom right.
