At different resolutions you need different cards. (Best to worse)  all for the resolution at around 60fps or higher

1080p

1070, 1060/rx 580, rx 570, 1050 ti

1440p

1080 ti, 1080/(RX VEGA?) 1070, (maybe more VEGA)

1440p ultrawide

1080 ti, VEGA, 1080, 1070

2160p (4k)

1080 ti,  VEGA, 1080

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

OK, for 1440 × 3440 I recommend any of these (1070 is not a good option due to market fluctuations)

1080 ti, VEGA, 1080

OK,  depending on how much you want  to spend you can get a limited edition vega gpu + $100 off a 1700x/1800x + mobo combo and $200 off a 34" Samsung ultrawide (1440×3440)

good in my opinion is either 1080p or 1440p.

best cards for 1080p and maybe some 1440p are the rx 480/580, 470/570,  and the 1060 (don't get the 3gb 1060).

soon 1440p will become a norm like 1080p, and the 1070 is a really versatile card if you want a combination of high end at a low price

the sky is up

1080p: RX480/580/470/570, GTX 1060 6GB. I have a GTX 970 (1060 3GB equivalent) and it handles 1080p pretty well at very high settings. 1050 ti is not good enough for modern titles unless you get the 4GB version and are fine with medium settings.
1440p: GTX 1070, Fury. My GTX 970 can handle 1440p at medium to high settings in modern titles
4k: GTX 1080, 1080 ti, Vega. My GTX 970 doesn't have enough VRAM for 4k, and if it did, it would only manage low-medium settings.

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

1440p won't be a norm for ANYONE but PC users only, in the sense of the world, common devices,...like phones have it, where are all the 1440p TV's?

The 1080p resolution has been common for so long, talking years and years ago when 1440p was still niche...

1440p has existed for over 10 years, and capable GPU's to drive it, 5+ years or more... yet still a niche (altho more common today)

Yet where are all the 1440p/1600p TV's people can buy to go along with our niche (at the time) monitor/panels, they never happened...

It will be 1080p then 2160p as far as 'common' displays go.

The mainstream likely will not adopt 1440p for 'common' Displays outside of PC gaming markets.

Which is a shame, I find 1440p-1600p the BEST sweetspot for performance vs visual clarity from previously marketed & currently marketed GPUs.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I agree with you 1440p is the best spot at the moment for hi refresh rate n frame/rate 1440p144~165hz gaming. without being too expensive at least*. so you get the best of both worlds in a relatively manageable resolution that wont break the system... unlike 4k

Even the 1080ti which i have  is touching most AAA games at 144fps on 1440p on ultra and for a single card to perform at that calibre is amazing, and will be for the next few years to come.

maybe when 4k becomes cheaper and when a single graphics cards is capable of exceeding 100fps on most games maybe i may switch... but for now i'm content w/ 1440p
