  1. 1. What should I do next?

    • Haven't you spent enough money? Leave it alone and be happy!

    • Buy a new case and water cool that Beast! Maybe a second 1080 ti with the money you'll save.

    • Your sister needs a new PC. And X299 with a 10 core is looking pretty sweet.

    • Intel is of the Devil! Toss it out a window and get Threadripper and VEGA.

    • Sell it for parts and buy a nice Xbox.

Just a week after purchasing an Oculus Rift my aging Asus Maximus VI Impact motherboard decides to start freaking out.  It was constantly dropping USB devices and then wouldn't detect my 780 ti.  I looked around for a replacement Z87 or Z97 board but the prices on the used market are just insane.  So I decided it was time for an upgrade.  I replaced the motherboard with a Gigabyte Z270MX gaming 5, the CPU is an i7-7700k.  I also picked up an MSI 1080 ti, 32 Gb Crucial DDR4, and a 256 GB Samsung 960 Evo.  My Cablemod cables are still red and black from my previous build but you can't really tell with the LEDs overpowering them.  I realize it's not quite as impressive as my old water cooled system.  I just wanted to get your opinions.  I may end up giving this to my sister (she's still running an i7-930) and seeing what X299/X399/Vega have to offer.  Or I may get a new case and start watercooling this build.  Thoughts?

Old and new system pictures.

I woulda not got an NVMe ssd since it doesn't improve boot times or app launch times and also wouldn't have gotten a founders card but other than that looks good.

EDIT: Oh and 32gb seems overkill

Can you actually leverage the cores of Threadripper? Or even the chips on x299 for that matter?

Depedns what you use it for of course, but if you can make use of the extra cores/threads of a 16 core threadripper, then why not. Even if you just wanted it for the PCI-e lanes and extra cores I think threadripper is a good buy.

Give me your water cooling stuff :P

Also, that looks pretty slick - why not reuse the old WC gear on the new build?

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

I have two old Crucial SSDs that were in RAID 0 but they were already on their third system and showing some serious issues.  The NVMe was on sale so i figured why not.  As for the RAM, I like to fill all the slots.  You should see my old HP server...it has 72 GB in 18 slots.

I may just do that.  I'll need a new GPU block at the very least.  I'm also kinda over the red fittings.  It's on the table though...literally as well as figuratively.

The budget is pretty close to unlimited.  I don't plan on doing anything for at least a few months and some good benchmarks come out so I'll have plenty of time to save.  I do mostly gaming.  I also rip and re-encode lots of movies/tv shows for my Plex server.  Up over 5 TB now and still tons more to go.  I've thought about streaming but haven't really had the horsepower to pull it off.

Lol, it's not as bad in person as it is in the picture.  But I do agree.  It's not final but does wash out the red power cables so it isn't very noticeable.  All the lighting is RGB so I can change it to whatever I want.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well Micro Center had an open box 1080 ti for sale today so I guess that settles it.  I'll be moving to the build log thread as I start to work on what case this will all be going in.  The plan is custom hard line water cooling eventually.  It's gonna be great fun!

Thanks!  It's not going to stay this way though.  I have BIG plans.  I started a thread in the build log section with my current inventory and kinda what I'm working towards.  The case it's in now is from my 4770k and 780 ti build,  As soon as I find a case I like I'll start buying the water cooling stuff I need.
