I have a 2TB Seagate 5400RPM SSHD I bought about 6 months ago. I've noticed my write times while downloading things can drop to 0 sometimes for no reason, and disk usage sits up at 100% after start up for as long as 10 minutes.

I'm considering getting a 512GB Samsung 850 PRO SSD and using the SSHD as a storage device for files while putting all games and the OS on the SSD. Thoughts on this? Is it frowned upon to use an SSHD with an SSD? Should I just get a 2TB HDD for £50 as my main storage?

Suggestions are appreciated.

ssd for windows, hdd/sshd for files. games can be put on ssd to get better loading time

dont buy a sshd next time, barely any benefit and isn't as fast as an ssd.

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I play battlefield a lot, and the difference between an ssd and hdd loading a match up are HUGE. On my old pc, my toshiba hdd would take forever, to the point where the game was like halfway through before I could start playing. On my new pc with a neutron xti ssd, I can get into the game almost before everyone else, give or take a bit.

It honestly depends on the game. For games such as battlefield, it's a must. But for some other games, for example, overwatch, it isn't hugely important. The only benefit you'll get in overwatch with an ssd is being able to pick your hero a second or two before most of your team. So in other words, very beneficial in some games, not very in others. As for the OS loading, it is lightning quick in comparison to hdd's.

Once you SSD, you can never go back.  That said, you don't need to get the best one.  All SATA SSDs will have roughly the same performance, so just look for a good deal.

Right you guys are kind of missing the point here though.

I wanna know if the SSD would work ok with the SSHD.

I don't really want to scrap the SSHD to buy an HDD, would it be perfectly fine to use the SSHD as a main storage/data drive and buy an SSD to be my application/OS drive?

Yes, but you'll need to backup all your important files on a flash drive, then format the SSHD and install windows on the SSD.  If you skip that step, you'll end up with windows installed on both drives which is dumb and annoying.  I just went through this when I installed a boot ssd on my kid's computer.  In fact, I formatted the old HDD but there is a second 'system' partition that also needs to be deleted or it causes grief.

If anyone else has any input I'd like to know - good to get a well rounded opinion before diving in to these things.

Don't use SSHDs. The technology was never perfected.

Buy an SSD and use the 2TB for everything else - I have a 1.5TB RAID0 array that performs as well as an SSD. Here's my config:

240GB SSD (Windows ONLY)

1.5TB RAID array: EVERYTHING ELSE (Programs, downloads, music, pics, movies, etc (133,712 files, 10,555 folders)

what? No, just clone the drive with Todo Backup and then format and re partition the SSHD with Windows Disk management

I could clone it if I had a drive to clone it to. I'm not gonna fit 1.5TB of data on a 512GB SSD.

This whole point o the question was finding out if getting an SSD and using it alongside my SSHD would be a problem, the general consensus seems to be 'no'.

If you guys recommend not using my SSHD (that I already have) could you recommend a good HDD I could use alongside an 850 Pro? I also don't want it to be too expensive (considering I already have an SSHD which would apparently work fine with an SSD as the OS/Application drive).

I don't think anyone's recommending you dump the SSHD for an HDD. The consensus is not buying an SSHD if you were considering it.

Using the SSHD with an SSD is perfectly fine, and you will see better performance out of that than you would using an SSD with a traditional spinning HDD.

Here is a chart using our current lineup model for SSHD, called FireCuda, which compares the first 3 days of gaming storage utilization across several popular titles, and SYSmark ratings from various drive types and combinations. First of the grays is 7200 RPM 1TB spinning HDD, second (lightest gray) is our SSHD, third (darkest gray) is an SSD + 7200 RPM HDD combo, purple is SSD + our SSHD combo, and lastly blue is SSD.

Good luck in getting the best performance in your system!
