Why does Windows 10 take so long to install

I usually install Windows 7 or 8 on my client's computers, because like me, most of my clients hate Windows 10 and are happy with anything else.

 

A client recently came in with six computers that have no OS and asked for me to volume license Windows 10 onto them.

 

Normally, Windows 7 usually takes 10 minutes to install on a crappy 5400RPM 160GB SATAII drive.

 

Windows 10 takes an hour.

 

Windows 10 isn't much bigger than Windows 7, in fact the Windows 7 Professional ISO I have is the same size as the Windows 10 pro ISO I have.

 

So why the fuck does 10 take so damn long? I've got six computers just eating my electricity while installing Windows 10 when the'd be done and updating on 7.

I've installed windows 10 3 different times in the last week trying to fix a computer, and it only took me around 10-15min to install.

I have the same problem, though the installation process didn't take more than 15 minutes. Once I booted into the desktop, however, it used a solid 30 + mins on updating.

What kind of RAM does the PC have?

the iso file itself is the same size, but think of that as more of an installer or a zip file. you can't run full windows from the iso. i am pretty sure that windows 10 is much larger than windows 7. or it just has the worst install ever. or both.

Pentium G4400, with 8gb of 2400mhz DDR4, and a Kingston 240gb SSD

Are you installing Windows 10 on all of the computers at the same time or one after another?

USB or disk installation?

Slow hard drives?

Incredibly low amount of RAM?

Windows 10 just sucks.

 

Windows 10 does fall under the definition of malware.

However, Windows 7 takes no time at all, I did a test install using my own Optiplex 760 in the same config under W7 and it took like 10 minutes.

10 takes about 9 minutes for everything

Same here. Files get unpacked and prepared quickly but my god it takes long for it to get to the desktop. I wonder what it is doing... I mean my crap laptop took two hours to install 10 but when my main rig takes longer than 30mins from boot through install to desktop i get very annoyed.

Crap "laptop" has atom cpu, 2gb ram and IDE based hdd (80gb).
Main rig has ryzen 1700, 16gb ddr4 and installed 10 on a 7200rpm hdd, 40gb partition. (hdd seemed to bottleneck as the activity light was basically on all the time)

 

I installed win7 on my friends optiplex 760, took about 20 mins from boot to desktop (Install files were on the same hdd, different partition.)

It's less than 300 updates, even with SP1. Te most I've ever installed was 265, and it took less than a day. That was for a non-destructive reinstall.

I just installed a new build of Windows 10 on my laptop (version 1703 with all updates from June and earlier) and from the time I clicked where to install to it being ready at the desktop was like half an hour at least. But then because Windows update sucks so much ass, it took another hour and a half to update.

I believe it's because it tries to download updates during the installation process. Windows update is slow as it is and lots of small writes are among the most taxing operations for a hard drive.

 

I don't think any pc should be without an ssd nowadays though. It doesn't excuse the slowness of the installer but still.

Yeah, on average with these six Optiplexes it's taken 2 hours to fully install. Then another hour before I'm on desktop.
