It'll work, but high end GPUs, like the 1080 and 1080Ti, will be slightly bottlenecked at 1080p in less demanding games. Pair Ryzen with some fairly fast RAM.

I mean, I figured it wasn't necessary to specify "*when talking about desktop PC hardware that supports PCIe" but maybe that was a foolish assumption

What specific GPU and CPU. A Ryzen R7 1800X + GT 710 or 1080 ti with an upcoming Ryzen 3 are both not good combos.
