What is the best processor for mid range gaming (1080p - 1440p) from Intel?

i5 6600/6600k or 7600/7600k, 6500/ 7500 would be a sweet spot for a midrange 1080p Intel build.

Either a recent unlocked i5 (6600K or 7600K), locked i7, or an older unlocked i7 on the 'Z' platforms. The 7700K, 6700K, and 4790K are dynamite chips for single or dual GFX card (or a single GFX card with dual GPUs, such as the Titan Z or R9 295x2) high end gaming.

Personally, I'd go with the 6700K or 7700K and a lower end GPU (RX470) than an i5 with higher end GPU, because either of those will be capable of giving a great experience for quite some time, and it's exceptionally easier to upgrade a GPU than it is CPU.

Ryzen would be better, but seeing as you specified Intel it would be either the 7500 or 7600k (7700k is more on the high end).

I would advise adding this to your first post, or you'll keep getting Ryzen suggestions. Lots of people on here asking for advise just don't know about Ryzen, and that's what people are going to assume about you. They're just trying to help.

Locked i7's will always make much more sense than unlocked i5 because with the motherboard and cooler price difference it turns out the same cost but the i7's offer more raw power.

 

Just get a h110m brand new which is cheap and supports both gens already with the 6700 or 7700 even used whatever you find cheaper

If you're building a mid-ranged build and you absolutely have to have Intel, I'd personally get an i5. You can get a locked i5 such as an i5-7500, which then you'll be saving money because you won't need money for a cooler or for a motherboard to overclock it, plus it's usually cheaper than an unlocked CPU. You'll still get good enough CPU performance to keep something like a GTX 1060 or an RX 570/580 happy.

 

You can get an unlocked i5 (a 6600K or a 7600K - just get whichever is cheaper - if the 6600K is cheaper you will likely more than make up for the difference in clock speeds with a simple overclock). However, you are going to have to pay extra to cool it and to overclock it, and the performance you get in return, depending on your chip, may not always make or break any benchmarks.

 

One last thing to consider are locked i7s (a 6700 or 7700 - take GHz per dollar into account and get whichever has the better value). Like the locked i5, you won't have to pay extra for a cooler or a Z170/Z270 motherboard. An i7 isn't going to give you the best value for gaming, but some games do benefit more from hyperthreading than from overclocking, so this is something you should also consider.

 

If you buy Kaby Lake, you will need to get either a 200-series board or get a 100-series board with an updated BIOS. If the BIOS isn't up to date on a 100 series chipset board, it's possible that you may need to get a Skylake CPU to update the BIOS so you can use your newer CPU. 

 

Lastly, if you have access to a Micro Center, take advantage of it.

thank you for your advice. Whats a good mobo to go with a processor such as the i5 7600? 4 RAM slots would be preferred

I'd suggest an i5-6600(K, if you'd like), and a Z-board with RAM around the 2800 or 3000MHz range. The 6600 comes with a cooler, but if you're buying a cooler anyways get a 6600K.

There's some amazing deals on the used market right now. Used 6th gen i5's are super cheap.

If you get used, get a haswell i5, preferably the i5-4590 or better, or if you have a better budget, get the i7-6700. (Or k variant if you have enough cash)

For gaming you really only need the i7-6700, or the i5-4690. (4590 works though.)

I just got a 6500 with an Rx480 for 1080p gaming and I've been very happy so far.  I picked it because I didn't want to mess with overclocking and the cheaper b150 mobo and sticking with the stock cooler made the price advantage appealing.  Couldn't find a used one but I didn't look very hard either.  The only reason I didn't go with the 7500 was price; didn't need the extra speed or features.  So far the rig has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it without flinching.

 

Throwing out my own question too..  for a mid-range setup like this and at 1080p, are there going to actually be any games that would be bottlenecked by an i5?

yes games like Gta 5, ryzen is a better choice now.

Not enough to be a significant worry, though Ryzen does offer better value at the cost of... well, cost.

Yes..  I actually really wanted to go Ryzen but I didn't want to wait for the mobos to come down in price before building.  Maybe when I build my wife a computer.
