You're right about the acronyms part, but still no, since the large majority of people say gif with a G then the most correct way of pronouncing it is gif not jif.

 

Language adapts to how people speak.

There are plenty of words that were said "wrong" or "differently" than intended, but English adapts and since the majority of people said it that different way, that becomes the norm.

It no longer is "what the creator said", it is "what the people say".

And I think it is fairly obvious to everyone that gif is the much more popular way of saying it.

Not to mention that there are enough "exemptions" to the rule about pronouncing a soft "g" when followed by an "i", that the rule itself is not clear, and, honestly, is arbitrary.

 

Because Gift is pronounced with a hard G, and is the exact same word just without the ending Tee sound, I pronounce GIF with a hard G.

Yeah, English is like 90% exceptions lol.

It changes and adapts to what the majority of people say.

If someone is named geoff you don't say geff is pronounced. like jeff. You also don't say garaffs instead of jiraffs. The dude said id like JIF not GIF. G stands for graphical but the english language is stupid. Therefore it's JIF

I guess I should have stated that Geff was the pronunciation of the name geoff but with a hard G as most would pronounce it who are just learning English or don't know the rules of it yet.

I just pronounce it with a soft "G" because I think it sounds better. I've never heard an objective viewpoint of why one should pronounce it a certain way, so I just pronounce it the way I think sounds better and let others do the same, because we all understand each other. So, I am determined not to ever get into an argument about it. It's entirely fruitless.

Who cares? Gif is super obsolete and a product of web 1.0 and I think we are on 3.0 now right??? We are using HTML5 at least...

 

 

Anyway use Webm or Mp4 like the rest of the internet and move on...
