Do I really NEED a 1080?

Hello, So i'm stuck between getting a 1080 or a 1070. I'm going for longevity (I know so just get the 1080) but price is always a thing, and i'm only looking for 1080p at 60 frames. Would a 1070 be just fine for that kind of use in modern games for the next few years maybe more? Thanks for any replies really appreciate it.

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the replies! definitely helps and am definitely siding with a 1070. Spend some extra in cooling memory or anything really haha. Thanks again.

No, you don't, not for that res and framerate.  A 1070 will be more than enough, and with what you save, you can afford to get a new GPU sooner, which will be better than investing more now since tech does not age well

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

1070 would do you fine for 1080@60.

1070.  Your CPU will most likely bottleneck a 1080 at 1080p anyway.  Most consumer CPUs will, in fact.

As stated above, a 1070 will easy do you well for 1080p60. I own two of them and a 980 Ti for rendering work, but they game really well.

Just wait until the next gen...the 1080 Ti will be worth as much as the 1070 probably...I mean you can get 980 Tis used for $300ish now. Technology really doesn't age well (at least price to performance on higher end cards). I think spending $300-400 is the sweet spot.

I would try to find a 1070 on sale though.

Nothing will really last that well for a few years. Your best bet is to get the mid tier card and just keep upgrading. Honestly, the next generation the lower tier xx60 card will probably be all you need. 1080p will soon be for plebs.

Agreed. The way people are talking though makes it seem 1080 will be with us forever.

I know. I don't even game thaaat much and even I'm thinking about making the step up to 1440p, since 60fps is easily achievable with a 1080. I'm fine with high over ultra so I might even be able to eek out 100fps.

I currently game on an R9 285... I like it because its a bit of an oddball being a half step in generations... but I will be buying the new 580 once I get paid again.

Yeah agree with the above posts. I bought a 970, Happy as with it. got a deal on a trade up to a 980, got it.. soon as the 10 series launched my 980 is worth nothing and the 1070 kills it, so don't bother. Also its not like a 970/1070 offer bad performance at all. I'm going to keep my 980 till at least 12xx

my other rig I was running a GTX580 1.5gb in it, and it was playing GTA and everything happily. and a 1070 kicks the stuffing out of that card. the 1070 will age more than well enough.

Why not get double the performance with a 570?

Absolutely not. Get a 1070, or even a 1060 if you don't mind running games on high instead of ultra, and you'll have a lot more money for a GPU upgrade later. Nothing wrong with getting a 1080 if you have the cash to spend, but otherwise they're a huge waste relative to their performance benefits over the 1070.
