I'd say it's more along the lines of people trying to find niches in an overcrowded market and when it's hard to improve upon the design of the time tested toaster oven the only thing you can really do to try to stand out is be crazy and try something stupid like add RGB.

Well, one useful use for this is that if you fall from your Snowboard and the weather allows some faint visibility of light trough dense fog or heavy snow and rain, rescue services could potentially spot your Snowboard from afar .
