Are SSDs reliable

I have been researching to build a new computer for school. I've run into several videos on YouTube that talk about how SSDs cells burn out quite quickly, similarly to flash drives with constant read and right cycles. Is this still true, or has this problem been fixed with the new generations?

Check Samsung Evo 850, 860, 950 and 960 series.

They're reliable. That being said, it's possible to have HDDs that could last longer than SSDs. I have a bunch of 20 GB IDE HDDs from 20 years ago still working fine.

No, They highly dangerous. I lost my leg to one. Why you think Linus put his home gaming computers in another room far away from his children and family. 

 

SSD's also know as know as MT-558 MK3 were used in the First operation Desert storm and were advanced in secret since. I was truly surprised when I saw the first one on the Civilian market without even so much as a age restriction, Frankly this and MTV are why I think this world is doomed ! !

HDDs have moving parts that will wear out. SSDs have cells that can only be written to so many times. Samsung is a great way to go with great performance. The HyperX Savage from Kingston is another good one.

Unless you buy a cheap quality SSD, it will last much longer than a hard drive.

when it's done well though, they can outlast hdds quite often 

 

and either way, the performance improvement is very worth it in my opinion

I understand they are more durable and resident to shock. The question is, do they last as long as HDDs when you are constantly downloading and later deleting content.

I made once a test while still on win 7 pro. 

 

I had an HDD I think a Samsung 250 gb, I used O&O Defrag with the option recently used for quite some time to keep the partition "organized".

 

The boot up times, pure boot no bios post etc, were from the feel as fast as the SSD I did put in later. Even in some online games my well treated HDD loaded up zones faster than an SSD on another system, which by specs was far superior than mine. 

 

It depends on how you treat your HDD. Just use it like a garbage bin, throwing in stuff and never clean up, yes it gets slow. But even SSD when reaching a certain % of used space get slower. 

 

You can do the math for yourself if you want to know if a SSD is for you or not, most SSD today have a Terabyte to be written amount, like the old HDD MTBF. Take that number, and divide it by the amount you download per day/week/month. Then you know how long the SSD will hold before it reaches its mechanical end of life. 

 

I like to bring up the example with a carpet. A SSD is the same, ok not fluffy and to step on. But think of it, the more oyu walk on the carpet, it gets trodden through, until it's worn down completely. Same with SSD and their memory, the more it gets rewritten, the more wear is on the cells. And at some time they can't store information anymore. 

 

If you want to go with a SSD, like said above Samsung is quite good, as well as Crucial. And go for a number bigger than you thought needed and never fill it up completely. 

 

And another thought, get an SSD for your System/Programs/Games and an HDD as Storage.

 

Aunt Edith says: Sorry I forgot, never forget the point of a failure itself. I had HDD that died after not a year of use, and I got one, that is now over 20 years old and still going strong. Same with SSD.

It was mostly in jest. I've had 2 hard drives fail on me before I retired my first SSD purchased in 2011 and that was only because of in page errors

This problem has actually gotten worse. TLC drives which enable dense SSDs have a P/E cycle count of 1,000. MLC drives have a P/E cycle count of 10,000. And in fact, SSDs are the only thing that get more worse from Moore's Law. However, should you really worry? No. Assuming the wear leveling in a quality SSD lives up to its name, you'll probably be two systems after the original before it croaks. Or dead.

 

As an anecdotal point, I clocked in at about 1.5-2TB per year on my 256 GB SSD. If I were to continue at this rate, it'll be dead in over a century.

SSDs have a limited number of times that they can be written to but this was only a problem in the early days. Even then it was around 5 years of average use. Now it's well beyond 15 years

I think it is the write and erase cycle. Reading doesn't wear out the cell.

One thing you get it wrong. P/E cycles is Program/Erase cycle, not read and write cycles. Reading doesn't wear out the nand cell.
