Best order to play the Kingdom Hearts series?

Profoundsoup

What is the best order to play the KH series as far as understanding the story. I was thinking something like

Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories/Re: Chain of Memories
Kingdom Hearts II
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance

I would just play by release so that poor mechanics don't kill/frustrate you.

Spoiler

They'll likely kill you.

I'd totally skip Chain of Memories and find a cutscenes video on YouTube, you won't remember anything while dealing with the complete garbage GBA card combat system anyway. Make sure you play the remakes at least for improved-ish controls (all the games have pretty wonky controls...) and some extra cutscenes, then once again look up on YouTube the hidden cutscenes for the hardest difficulty and secret bosses if you aren't doing that on your own

oh right I'd also skip 358/2 days unless you like drawn out monotony

not really, if OP wants to i think its worth it. you are taking it too seriously, the game was designed for fun.
