I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

Yeah. I'm having a bit of a mission critical right now with my old PC I just introduced to folding.

I saw your post earlier, I think if you can manage to buy the cheapest gpu suported by F@H (and your PSU), and use that P4 tu run it, you will get a LOT more PPD. In other forum I saw a guy running a 7970 with a AMD Sempron with no problem.  If your motherboard have a PCI-E slot, your are good to go.

Who are the most knowledgeable people on here (besides Whaler_99) when it comes to F@H?

Depends on what knowledge your looking for :P

F@H history and news, Is normally in my department. (certainly when it comes to how F@H clients used to run in the past. also know a bit about older systems).

Whaler and Mentalguy when it come to current folding systems (I never had a 4 processor system so I cant give personal experience on the matter .)  Although, I am pretty close to them as I do know the tips and trick to maximize the performance on most systems.

Xsilent(X) *I would say* is be the local linux guru.

Of course though, if your only looking for info on this forum, then your limiting yourself on the info you could be getting.

One of the things I recommended early on when the team was just starting out was to check out other forums and learn from them. Even though I've been folding for over 3 years (4th year will be in 1st of April), I'm still young compared to some of the Ancient Folders out there.

 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/876-foldinghome-install-guide-and-links-linustechtips-team-223518/?p=21982

<snip>

I also recommend watching other teams forums/sites. Many of them have very detailed guides and tip's on improving current systems and really powerful systems like 4 processor servers.

Just to link a few (you dont have to add these but there good sources of information):

Tom's Hardware folding@home guide: http://www.tomshardw....esting#t499233

[H]ard forum "[H]orde|Central v3.0 - Everything DC (FAQ's, Guides, Tips and Tricks)": http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1575052

and some of these ancient folders know way more than any of us put together.

Words I actually read.

Since you said you're good with older stuff, on my old 2.8GHz Hyper-Threaded Pentium 4, it's only hanging around 50% usage, even when I have it set to full, medium, or light. What's the issue?

Sorry I didn't respond back yesterday, was at the Antietam National Battlefield yesterday and was worn out from all the walking and site-seeing yesterday.

(BTW, if your in the US. Till the end of Monday, all US national parks are free admission. http://home.nps.gov/news/release.htm?id=1531

Anyways, to your problem. Only running at 50% on a HT P4?

Sounds like your running on a single core cpu slot instead instead of a multi-thread slot.

I'll copy part of my guide (that I help made on my other team) that will help you change it. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/34683-12-toms-hardware-folding-home-team-guide-testing#1147115

You will need to open your Client Control and not the web client to change the setting(s).

4.1 Slots:

Slots list what the client is running. It varies from each mode of where the slots are located but these list what your running, (CPU and GPU), WU, and other details about the WU.

Slots can also configured to run in certain ways. One configuration is if your running CPU but you don’t want all the threads/cores running F@H

d8ff.png

To get to slots, You need to click on the config button between the View and Exit buttons.

Click on the slots tab and you should see this.

vbks.png

The client, during installaion, will have already made all the slots that you can use based on the hardware the computer has.

Although if you need to switch slots like going to cpu, adding additional gpu, or adding flags (flags in the next section) you'll need to press either press "add, remove or edit".

sb0d.png

On this, it's self explanatory on most of the things.

Select CPU to run Cpu WU's. You can select the numbers of threads/cores you would like to run on.

Although when limiting on the number of threads to run on, try to avoid using a prime number of threads such as 3, 5, and 7. Some WU's do not like this setting and will fail.

GPU to run GPU WU's.

Flags at the bottom is covered in the next section.

Just change that "-1" (or what ever it says) to "2".

This should fix the issue.

Now the PPD figures, When my P4 2.8GHz was still working back in the day on SMP client,  it was able to get about 400 PPD. That was without gpu folding running at the same time (Geforce 6200 could not run F@H as it didn't have cuda cores).

Pic and specs of the old system in my build log while I was upgrading to my Core I7 machine.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/7341-family-system-rebuild-warning-very-high-res-photos/ (Warning: high res photo's. It might take a moment to load all the pics in.)

[spoiler=]SMP Client: is an old client that you were force to use if you wanted to run on multiple threads/cores at the same time.

This was before the V7 client that we're using now that includes everything into 1 client.

Of course that machine died in Oct. 2010 and this is Nov 2013 so you may get less PPD now or more. (unlikely more but you never know.)

Hope this fixes your issue  :)

You can actually change the CPU count while your current one is working - sorry - I assume it was at 2 - on the Advanced window - does it say CPU:1 or CPU:2? You will want it to say :2 - if it says one, follow the guide to manually set it to two.

Now, on my Core2Duo, set at 2 - I still get 50% usage for some bloody reason... it's a folding thing though, so nothing to really fix there..

I didn't really play with those settings, but now it's at -1 (I think), which if I remember right, it automatically chooses. Could part of it be that they're threads and not actual cores?

Reading this thread https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?nomobile=1&f=9&t=1206

It seems to be because it's old, it's early hyper-threading, and it's a Pentium 4. Folding normally doesn't mind virtual cores (my hyper-threaded i7 did fine), but for aged hardware it might be a different story.

Darn. Would something like an Athlon 2 X2, X3, or X4 yield better results? And I'm still going to leave HT on, since I do use it for other things here and there, and the extra snappiness is nice.
