Unless something happens to boost Japan's birth rate, its population will shrink by a third between now and 2060. One reason for the lack of babies is the emergence of a new breed of Japanese men, the otaku, who love manga, anime and computers - and sometimes show little interest in sex.

You think this is bad? Just wait until the Oculus Rift and good eroges becomes mainstream. It will be the end of humanity.

 

Edit: I've jokingly said that I don't think war will be the end of humanity, but rather the perfection of virtual reality sex will be the end. I've always said it as a joke but I honestly believe it will. I got a "waifu" (not anywhere near as seriously as some people do though) and if I could see her in a virtual reality world then I don't really see any reason why I would go through the effort to meet a real girl again, especially not since she won't be as perfect as a fictional character. It's more convenient, practical and as technology progresses the benefits of having a real, physical partner will disappear one by one.

Read most of the article now and I can relate to the Japanese people. I am not that shy, I am quite charismatic and according to people on /g/ I am decent looking as well. I could probably get a girlfriend if I tried, but I simply don't want one because of all the extra responsibility, planning needed, you have to take a ton of her things into consideration whenever you might want to do something. I simply don't think the benefits are worth the drawbacks. Doesn't seem like I am alone in thinking like this either.

 

People called me weird when I spent my days on IRC discussing stuff on the Internet with people, then Facebook launched and now I am weird for not discussing stuff with people on the Internet (or to be more specific, facebook). It will probably be the same with this...

You're off by a few hundred million people buddy. There are ~127 million people in Japan, and the birthrate is declining very quickly. Some people even call the lack of childbirth in Japan a crisis.

Well it is very densely populated. The thing is there are 127 million Japanese people, on a small island. The population density in Japan is 339 people per km2. For comparison, the US has a population density of 35 people per km2, about 1/10 of Japan. It's not the current population that is the issue, it's the decline in childbirth that's the issue. Like the video someone else linked said, if it continues like this when the population of Japan will be halved by the end of the century. That's really, really bad. That's if things say the same, but things are just getting worse and worse for Japan so the decline in population might be even faster in let's say ~20 years.

Prefer isn't really the correct term here. People like them aren't in this situation by choice; if a pretty high school girl offered them sex, these men would quickly jump ship.

They have extremely small living spaces. A single person apartment isn't even 100 feet squared. Where in the us we have hundreds of miles of unoccupied land.

If things don't change soon by 2044 Japan will have around 300,000 people.
