ed, sometimes nvi. Sorry, can't vote for any of both because you didn't include them. 

 

I also use Emacs a lot - but it has a GUI.

I deal with dozens of client's running a lot of different variances of *nix for their servers. the ONLY thing consistent accross Linux, AIX, BSD, etc, is VI.

If I know it has vim installed, then vim. Otherwise vi (because as far as I know there is no linux distribution without it).
