What IDE (or text editor) do you use?

Eclipse for Java

Visual Studio for C#, C++

FlashDevelop for ActionScript

Aptana for Ruby, Ruby On Rails

Notepad++ for most other things, XML, LUA, PHP, etc.

Played a bit with Android Studio for Android Apps (still in Early Access)

I just use Notepad++ and gcc (in a Linux VM) for my C code.  I haven't done anything super complex so I don't feel an IDE is very necessary.

I mostly use Dreamweaver because my main work is webdevelopment. But for the other things I use notepad++ or sublime-text.

note that all texteditors I use are customized to have a black background and mostly lighter textcolors.

HTML / CSS / JavaScript

For single document editing: BlueFish

For "projects": brackets (really new opensource editor written in html and javascript!)

PHP / MySQL

Aptana Studio 3

To be honest, if you are working on a big project with PHP, Aptana Studio is just awesome because it has a built-in server, so you don't need one yourself for PHP

I use Notepad++ for "web languages" and scripts on Windows, in Linux either nano, gedit or emacs.

For C/C++ I use Qt on every platform, because of the great portability of applications.

Notepad++ and XAMPP for Web development. Probably will replace XAMPP with Vagrant. PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript (jQuery).

Eclipse for almost everything else: Java, C, C++, Python (Notepad++ works too); I've also added plugins for Android development, PHP/MySQL and Perl.

Eclipse is amazing due to the plugin support. It's even capable of developing for C# and .NET (potentially) with the right plugins.

Notepad++ for everything.

Why work so hard. Haven't your employer got on to you yet for not producing your projects on time. Most IDE will tell you where a error in your code right away. In Notepad++ you have to hunt down the error. In notepad, it has colorful fonts and line numbers. I want a tool that assist me in writing productive code as fast as possible.

I use VS 2012 Pro, Dreamweaver CC, Eclipse and a plugin to code PHP for VS 2012. I'm messing around with Adobe Edge Anamate right now. It's so cool using JavaScript instead of flash.

1.) I don't do programming for a job.

2.) I now use Eclipse for Java and Python's stock IDE for Python.

Three years into my CS degree at the university, the ide is usually up to the student and the instructor picks the compiler.

For C/C++ I use VS or Codeblocks depending on if I am on my system or a loaner.

Java I have used Eclipse for years although the last time I used java aside from aiding in debugging was 3 years ago.

Anything web related(html/css/php/asp/JS/mysql/ruby/etc) I use Dreamweaver.

Python/other random languages I either use sublime or notepad++.

I keep portable versions of notepad++ and codeblocks on me at all times and everything else is just set up on my computer.

TBH I have found that the awesomeness of Vim saves me more time than I loose with

syntax errors and other mistakes. Once you get to a decent level in a proper text

editor, you're loads faster in code editing than in any IDE where you don't have

all of those nice text editing features (having said that, if somebody knows of a

good IDE which has all of Vim's awesomeness, feel free to point me in that direction).

Obiously there comes a point where the project is so large and the code so complex

that this may no longer be true and you really would profit from a good IDE, but

seeing as I'm not a professional programmer working on huge projects with a bazillion

lines of code and a bucketload of files and libraries I haven't encountered that point

yet. :)

EDIT: Maximum lines of code in a project that I've actually deployed in practice

was around 15k, so still quite manageable for a single developer.

Eclipse and Netbeans.

I'd like to use only Eclipse, but Netbeans has some features I need especially for web programming...

(G)Vim (depending on whether I'm on server or local), DWM, zsh, and beginning to work tmux into my workflow as well (gcc used for most compiling needs). All running on Arch Linux.

Exactly. Notepadd++ is nice, but it really can't match the power of an IDE. Git integration, for example.

Holy crap, the only difference between that list and my own setup is that I use i3 instead

of DWM! :o

I've been using tmux for a while now and wouldn't want to live without it. Once you have

configured it with some proper keybindings it's an absolutely awesome tool. I very rarely

use GVim these days though since it's obviously not really of much use with a terminal and

tmux. So for me it's usually Xterm + ZSH + tmux + Vim.

EDIT: Yeah, Xterm. I've tried several alternative terminal emulators but I always

came back to Xterm, it just suits my own preferences best. :)

Yeah, i3 and DWM aren't hugely different either lol (I just have my DWM setup so perfectly customized I could never think to use anything else).

The more I use tmux the more I love it too!

I mostly like gvim because of the pretty colors to be honest lol, still have to get around to making my colorscheme work well in terminal vim.

I use urxvt right now, though xterm is fine too, I just initially switched due to some of the transparency options in urxvt, then never went back since I'm too lazy to switch over my configs!

It really is prett damn neat.

I actually prefer my Vim colour scheme to anything I've seen in GVim, but in the end

I suppose that really is just a matter of taste. See this post from earlier in the

thread for how it looks when editing a PHP file.

My main terminal colour is cyan font on black background, mixed with some accents from

my shell prompt (this desktop was from my old machine, currently I'm not running conky

on my rig due to a bug, but the terminal/tmux/zsh setup is still the same):

I tried urxvt a while back, exactly because of transparency, but in the end I found

that while transparency looks hella cool, I prefer having a solid black background

for working. I think there were one or two other reasons for switching back to xterm,

but I can't recall them anymore (it was a while ago ;)).
