1 GTX 1080 for 1440p 144hz or 2 GTX 1080s for 4K?

JohnFPS

I want to build my first gaming PC and I play console now and If I a joining the master race than why not go all out when I do. Just wanted to ask if I should go for 1440p 144hz or 4K the one reason I don't really want to go for SLI 1080s is SLI I have heard bad things about SLI not scaling at all in some games and not to forget 1 1080 is $600 and not $1200+ just don't know what to go for If you have any suggestions please post them thanks.

1440p 144Hz all the way. 4K is nice but the performance needed isn't quite there yet plus having a high refresh rate is incredible.

@JohnFPS Every considered getting an NVIDIA TITAN X? Same price as 2 GTX 1080s and you won't have to worry about the micro stuttering in SLI.

My Daily Driver:

Acer Predator Helios 300

I have a single Gtx 1080 and i use a 1440p 144hz monitor. Not a single games dips below 60fps, most games average around 80-100, First person shooters run at +100 and the most demanding games average around 70-80 fps. I would recommend to wait a little bit for VEGA and possibly the 1080ti. I wouldn't recommend 2 1080's for 4k, the high resolution becomes normal after a few weeks of use, and playing games at 60hz while having 2 1080's doesn't feel right. If you want to go all out, you could get 2 1080's or 2 1080 ti (If they come out) and get one of those fancy 4k 144hz monitors we saw at CES.

It's pretty damn close. A lot of outlets where using decently high levels of AA which is absolutely not needed at 4K. I can only barely tell a difference between no AA and 2X. FXAA is all you really need.
