The 480 has a higher memory clock, but the r9 fury has a different type of memory called HBM which makes the memory leagues ahead of the 480.

Which do you recommend for gaming? R9 FURY or the RX 480 it will be on a 1080p monitor with freesync and it will be the 4gb models. I will be using the sapphire nitro and nitro+ for aftermarket cooling

r9 fury is much better.

Yes the R9 Fury is a better card, just keep in mind you will be running with less power efficiency since its a slightly older architecture but if they are similarly priced its a no brainier, get the fury hands down the better card.

if you do decide to take the r9 fury path, please check to make sure your PSU can handle it. it's VERY power hungry and i heard some people recommend a 700 watt PSU, although i think a good 600wattish PSU wil do fine

Fiji cards use less power than Tonga ( r9 380/380x). A 550w PSU is enough.
